They are two completely different things. One is distracting you from driving. The other changes depending on what city or county you are driving through, road conditions be damned. These low speed limits are not about safety. They should be 70 in the urban areas. Most people drive that anyway.

Especially when nowhere else in the us has a speed limit that high....according to the article. I go 80 as it is since they raised it, but honestly I'm not in such a hurry to be anywhere that I need to drive that fast anyway.

That's not true. Montana has highways with no speed limits and THEY ARE SAFER!??!?!?

I just did a Google search of this and all of the sites I read said there are no longer any highways in the US with no posted speed limit. Only the autobahn in Germany has some sections with no speed limits posted. Only Poland has a higher speed limit at 86. So now Austin is 2nd only to Poland for fastest posted speed limit in the world.

From what I gather reading, German drivers take 4years of driver training and can be ticketed for driving while using cell phones, etc..Also, the left lane is for passing only. NOONE is supposed to be in the left lane except to pass and then get back over. The roads are also heavily monitored. This sentiment was voiced by others and that is., in contrast here in Texas people drive in the left lane whether they are going kinda slow or going fast and then just staying there. Americans take very brief driving courses and German cars are apparantly built somewhat differently than cars here are.

Uhhhh, yeah. In a word... Better.

Here in Texas I took 3 months of Driver's Ed (six weeks of class followed by a couple of times a week driving) while in the 9th grade. But they don't do that anymore. I already knew how to drive, learning on dirt roads on the way to some fishing hole down towards Paint Rock.

I don't do it; I don't even own a cell phone. Unfortunately, many do it and it's ridiculous. I work for a school district and one day while pulling in the parking lot, I noticed one of the teacher's pulling in in front of me and she was chatting on her phone. I even mentioned it to her when we got in the building and she said, "Blame my mother; she called me." Okay, I'll blame her mother...NOT!! Duh! I sure wish a policeman had been around and ticketed the heck out of her.
