I'm most familiar with Lubbock and Amarillo. Amarillo's my hometown and Lubbock's where I grew up the rest of the way. Well, acctually I grew up in a small town outside of Lubbock. I'm still in that small town called Ralls.
I'm happy here, and I just want to tell you that if you ever do go to Amarillo, make sure you watch one of those sunsets. They're Amazing.

Lubbock is more road-friendly and thought out. It looks cleaner and more managed than Amarillo. Lubbock is flat as a **** board and Amarillo's hillier than a field of cotton furrows.

Midland and Odessa - too barren, flat, and too many oil rigs
Fort Davis - fairly okay
Fort Stockton - awful
Alpine - fairly okay
Tyler - pretty, Piney woods
Pecos - like Midland and Odessa
Abilene - I don't like it.
Lubbock - I don't like it.
Amarillo - I don't like it.
Temple - mediocre
Marble Falls - very nice and pretty, lovely lake
Sweetwater - I don't like it.

Now that's just my opinion from traveling through these areas. I'm sure the people who live there are really the ones in which you should pay attention too.

Is Montgomery Wards, Montana Steakhouse, and Fish Camp sill open? Fish Camp was a Fish buffett, I think it was right off 35 & HK Dodgen Loop...Man that place was AWESOME!!!
Temple is still here, and growing. MW, Montana Steakhouse and Fish Camp are all closed. Mont. SH. is now a Japanese restaurant and Fish Camp just changed names. Still a buffett, just a different name. Can't remember it right now. Lots of new places are here and more are being built. Belton is also growing.

Hooks - Never even heard of it before. Neutral

Borger - I've heard of it but never been there. Neutral

Dalhart - Way up by Kansas right? Been through there but don't remember much about it. Neutral

Del Rio - I used to have a great time in Del Rio back during my college days. We would go to Del Rio then cross into Acuna to party. Probably not a great place to live, but its fun to visit. Positive

Midland - A nice city actually. Midland has had its problems but is really doing well now. Midland has a very low unemployment rate, in fact it is typically the lowest in the state. The current unemployment in Midland is 2.9%. The city is growing fast by West Texas standards and "not bad" by Texas standards. Midland is generally clean, middleclass, and pleasant. Of all the cities in West Texas, I think Midland has the most potential. Positive

Odessa - Midland's partner in the Petroplex. Odessa too has had its difficulties but is also doing pretty well now. Odessa is typically 2nd or 3rd for unemployment in the state, sometimes tied with Amarillo. Odessa is not pretty as it is a working class industrial city, but it is friendly, laidback, and easygoing. Positive

Fort Davis - Nice place in the mountains, I like Fort Davis alot even though I don't get up there much anymore. Positive

Fort Stockton - This city has done really well in the last few years. A small town that is developing nicely, Fort Stockton could be the suprise of West Texas. Positive

Alpine - Reminds me of Fort Davis. Nice place in the mountains but is terribly isolated, even by West Texas standards. Positive

Tyler - Great city. Many of my relatives live in Tyler. Its just a nice city overall, good economy and plenty of greenery. Positive

Marshall - I think of Longview-Marshall as East Texas' answer to Midland-Odessa. I never actaully see Marshall though. I have been to Longview a number of times on business and it reminds of Odessa but with trees. Positve

Iraan - The last time I went through Iraan it was a ghost town. Just boarded up buildings and weeds. That was a long time ago however and it may be better now. Negative

Pecos - I never go to Pecos either, but I do know a former mayer of Pecos. I won't tell him but I have an overall negative opinion of Pecos. Negative

Abilene - I guess honestly Abilene is not such a bad place, but for some reason I have an irrational hate for it. I can't explain why. Maybe it is because it is a little too religious. Back in the late 90's a friend of mine lived there and I went to visit, I surprised that the clubs closed at midnight on a Saturday! He said this was because of the Christian influence in the city. Who knows? Negative

Lubbock - Nice city with a great University, Lubbock is just an All-American city. Positive

Amarillo - Kinda like Lubbock but farther away. Amarillo usually has low unemployment as well and from what I see tends to grow well. Positive

Paris - Never been there. Neutral

Temple - Never been there, but its in the hill country right? It must be pretty decent. Positive

Lufkin - This city is way over in the Piney Woods. Never been there but it seems like a decent place with large trees and all. Positive.

Marble Falls - Marble Falls is in the hill country and has a famous name. It just sounds like a really, really nice place. I envision lots of Roman style temples made of marble and public fountians. Ok, just kidding I really don't but it is probably a nice place. Positive

Sweetwater - I stopped in Sweetwater on my to Dallas last summer and it looked good. There was a lot of new development along the Interstate. Positive

Default Loves Lubbock

Born and raised in Lubbock. Graduated from Texas Tech there. My husband and I live in the Dallas area now and have for many years. (We ended up leaving Lubbock because of his job situation, but it wasn't "by choice.") My husband is from Dallas, but he also would have preferred to live in Lubbock.
I don't like the Panhandle dust storms but I love, love. love that dry, semi-arid climate.

Del Rio: Somewhat attractive and quite vibrant; don't know about safety and border issues. Lake Amistad would be a huge plus for watersports and fishing.

Midland: See my posts beginning on page 7 of this thread: http://www.city-data.com/forum/texas...-please-7.html . In many ways, an undiscovered paradise.

Fort Davis: Cute but too small. I'm afraid it would get old very quickly.

Alpine: Pretty, nice weather, but very remote and too much altitude. University is a plus. Marfa and Alpine seem arty and tolerant, unlike much of backwoods Texas.

Abilene: Attractive downtown, zoo, Burro Alley! A few hours from Fort Worth. Too many Christian fundamentalists.

Lubbock: Too Cold. Too Conservative. Texas Tech University a real plus.

Amarillo: North Pole. Too Conservative.

Marble Falls: Near Austin. Moderate winters. Resort atmosphere.

You didn't mention San Angelo. Fine, pretty city. University. Clean air.

I would NOT want to live in any of the other cities.

I was reading your post, trying to find info about San Angelo, the other cities you mention seem fairly close to SA is there a reason you dont mention it? My husband just recieved a job offer there and I was just wondering if you knew something I didnt. We are moving from Illinois.
