To debzkidz , very true.. I basically would work retail and other min wage jobs. Tho i do also do construction work for my dads business... I also wanna add that im not going solo, me and a friend r gonna go 2gether. Which is why im looking into places near big cities. He wants to live the city life and while i dont mind it id like to have some stuff that suits my intrests as well.

Austin or Fort Worth! Fort Worth may be a little more affordable and there's TONS to do in the area. Austin and the Texas Hill country are fantastic as well, but can be pricier.

You wouldn't regret either choice, in my opinion. NOT Dallas - Dallas has the personality of a plastic cup. And not a red solo cup either! LOL

Like the red solo cup reference, lol.. Note taken on fort worth. What exactly is there to do in the area? At some point within the next few months i'll be flying to each area im considering(austin, dallas/fort worth and houston) so i can get an actual feel for the places but im just trying to get an idea of where exactly to look. Probably wont actually move til febuary-april of 2013.

Kathryn makes a good point. Ft Worth is cool! Look up the Fort Worth stockyards and also look up Sundance Square (real fun pedestrian area). They have a fantastic arts district and awesome botanical gardens if you like museums. Some FTW people may reply to this and elaborate on the new projects the city has going on along the Trinity river. People are really friendly there, too, unlike the big solo cup next door! I'm serious people are really nice in FTW!

Houston has the potential for some the best outdoor scene(fantastic salt water fishing within easy driving and also east distance to huge East Texas lakes) but the young singles scene will most likely not be up to par. Austin has consistent water issues and fishing is less than optimal although hill country deer hunting is great...if you can afford it and the best action for the younger crowds.

Very little public hunting in Texas (only 3% of the land) so be prepared for annual lease fees for deer($1000/year or more for the Hill Country). Day lease fees can be much more reasonable especially for population control of deer (re: doe hunts-$100/day). Most public hunting is in East Texas in the 4 National Forests. In Texas be prepared to pay for antlers.

DFW area ... East of Dallas has great freshwater fishing and pretty good deer hunting with more reasonable lease fees. Hog hunting is good in many areas of Texas with no season or bag limits. East Texas fishing is the best overall in the state for freshwater. Water shortages and lake crowding are issues around the MetroMess though kinda like Austin area.

San Antonio puts you 2-3 hours from fantastic mid-coast salt water bay fishing and 3 hours from the best bass fishing in America at Lake Falcon. Still has access to great Hill Country deer hunts and more expensive South Texas trophy deer hunts too. Also great dove hunting and some pretty fair quail populations. Name your poison but I'd be tempted by San Antonio and its outdoors scene. Can't speak to the singles scene and to me SA doesn't have a big city feel.

College Station is pretty much Hickville although I like the area.
JMHO.

I agree with the Ft Worth suggestion.

I would nix the College Station idea. It's a great place, if you're a student or alumni, but I can't imagine living there if I had no tie to the university. It's a small town with 50,000+ students in it. Virtually everyone there has some tie to the school. If you aren't one of them, you're going to have a hard time fitting in. Yeah, you might get to know a few while you are working next to them at your minimum wage job, but they are going to quit and move on as soon as they graduate. My son was there for 4 years, and I actually heard him mention one friend that was not a student. He was only a passing acquaintance, who was a paramedic that was dating a girl he knew.

If you check out Ft. Worth, keep in mind that just north is Possum Kingdom Lake. I don't know how the fires left it, but it's still really nice to camp and do other activities. South of Ft. Worth is Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim. AND about half a dozen little areas that are quite pretty...so getting out of town to have a little outdoor fun, won't take long at all.

And I agree - Dallas doesn't have that young, fun feel to it - maybe because I'm old now!! But as others suggested, Austin is pretty nice. I haven't lived there since the late 80's but what I remember was the "feel" of Austin. It's kind of like you're in on a secret and all the cool people live there - or maybe that was me? For those more familiar, they can give you specifics but the outdoor activities are numerous.

Good luck!!
