OP: I would just stick to TX. Reynosa hasn't been safe since 2006, and seems to be the more violent of the two cities. I don't hear as much about Matamoros, but generally any Mexican border town within the paths of the drug lords trying to bring drugs into the U.S. is not safe. When their "runners" are caught, they lose money. The more they get caught, the more violent they get. Stay away.

El Mercado downtown would be another good San Antonio place to visit for that.
