Default Cornbread and Milk mix Poll!

Ok, fellow Texans...

Here is the poll tied to an earlier that discusses "cornbread and milk". Most native Texans over 35 at least, will recognize the pattern. Some younger ones will gag at the thought...if they have heard of it at all.

Briefly though, (bear with me, fellow natives to explain to those who have never heard at'all.! LOL).

Cornbread is a staple in Texas/South. The combination with milk (sweet or butter), in a glass (Mason jars worked well), mashed up together was often considered a "great snack" at night (it was filling and good and put you to sleep! LOL).

It is probably important to mention to younger Texans responding that "sweet milk" really just translates into regular milk. "Buttermilk" is the part of the "original milk" that, in those days, was left over after churning for butter and cream. Contrary to what some think, buttermilk is NOT "sour" milk at all. Although yeah, it can involve a developed taste. Hell, I didn't like it at all until I got older. I couldn't understand how ANYBODY could drink that stuff! LOL

Bottom line is, many of us either did ourselves and/or grew up watching, our parents/grandparents/etc., eating this as a snack before bedtime. Hell, far as that goes, during the Depression Era, and not a lot to eat at all? Then it could actually be a full meal...

Actually, Rebby, I wouldn't mind baking some up and taking a slice and slathering it with butter. And have that with a glass of 2%.

But mashing it up with milk? That'd take some getting used to. Sounds like a variation of cornbread pudding.

Either buttermilk or sweet milk for me. It's really the only way I consume buttermilk other than in recipes (buttermilk biscuits, pancakes, etc...). I had a friend growing up who's mom grew up in a very rural area and when you had dinner with them, dinner was served with buttermilk to drink. That was too much for me.

My parents would often have buttermilk with cornbread in it along with a bowl of beans for dinner. I'm thinking after Sunday evening service was a popular time. Both my parents lived through the Depression while I wasn't born until 67 which probably explains why they loved it and I had a hamburger. Since they are both gone now it brings back very happy memories. Might have to try it someday but right now neither is allowed on my diet

I use sweet milk. Done this since I was a kid. Use to have some old goblets that we used for ice tea and they worked great to crumble the cornbread up into and then pour the milk over it. They've long been gone and now I usually use a pint mason jar. Good stuff, Maynard!

I just fixed a big pot of pinto beans with a hambone last week. A pan of buttered Texas cornbread goes really well with beans but buttermilk is just a kind word for clabbered. Ug!

I drink a couple of big glasses of buttermilk everyday. Growing up, we would often have cornbread crumbled up in a glass of buttermilk (this was in Memphis, Tennessee in the 60s--I know my family has enjoyed this for generations). So it's not just a Texas thing. But don't even try to attempt this with that sweet Yankee cornbread. You will be sorely disappointed!
