One CRANKS home-made ice cream. The ice cream freezer has a crank that you turn. The crank then turns the dasher, which incorporates air into the mixture, so it has a texture that does not resemble a brick.

I've cranked my share of ice cream. We have 3 hand-crank freezers that we use even now. Best ice cream in the world.

grind coffee
churn butter
crank ice cream

Your poll is wonderful, Reb! Don't let 'em beat you down!

I don't mind shelling peas. I much prefer an electric ice cream maker to cranking it by hand, but I love home made ice cream, ESPECIALLY made with some of those DEEP SOUTH GEORGIA PEACHES! LOL couldn't resist.

I said I haven't shelled black-eyed peas, but I'm not sure. I don't recall doing it, at least. I did churn ice cream many times. Real vanilla bean was great, but fresh peach? Mmmmmmmm!

LOL Please Lord, no, say it won't happen!

I have an electric ice cream maker now, but have done my fair share of cranking on the manual ones. When we were kids, we loved to crank it and would do it until we just couldn't get it to turn, then (like others have mentioned) Daddy would take over.

Shelled many a black-eye and purple hull pea and also the pinto beans. I used to can a lot and put up jars of both. The pintos are way easier to shell (when you catch them just right, the hull needs to be yellow w/red streaks running through it) than the peas. But the peas are so much easier to pick from the vines than the pintos. The peas are on top of the vine and easy to get to, whereas the pinto are under the bush.

I use to have a lot of corn to put up to. I remember so well, sitting out under the big shade tree, shelling peas or beans, or husking corn. When I was working with the corn I had a 2 big washtubs that I would use. One for the husks that later got thrown to the cows and the other for the ears. Just used one washtub for the hulls when working with the peas/beans and lots of big bowls.

If you have someone helping you (I'm talking about someone you like to talk to) it can actually be fun. That is, unless you have so many your fingers start to cramp and your back begins aching! Time to quit!

I have seen the crank ice cream machines, of course, but I don't remember ever doing it myself. My grandparents had to have used a manual crank machine when Mother was a child, but I never saw it. Even in the 1950s, my grandparents and parents both had electric machines!

I am going to have to grow some pintos and black beans in the garden one of these years! I can't imagine how good these beans must be fresh. I've always had them cooked from the dried stage (other than the occasional black-eyed peas)!

The fresh pintos are great! They cook up so red and pretty too and absolutely have a different flavor from the dried. If I didn't live on this hard rock ground I have to put up with now, I'd have a garden in a heartbeat and plant all my favorite things. As it is, I'm confined to growing some tomatoes & peppers in old syrup tubs (equivalent to whiskey barrel planters in size).

LOL You know we Texans love our beans, its hard to keep them out of ANY food thread.

LOL!! Yep, we do love our beans and food in general.

I didn't have a garden this summer, but I usually do, and they're removable planters on wheels! It's very cool here at night on both ends of the tomato season, so being able to move them really helps!
