Do you really eat Coon?
I have a serious question for you all. Does the majority of Texas really eat coon? I'm asking this because I have a dear friend who lives in Houston and tells us they love to eat BBQ coon.
At first I thought she was joking, but she was serious. Bein' from way up north...almost to Canada we do not dine on raccoon. And seriously...does it really taste like chicken? BTW, this is NOT a joke, but a serious question.

She HAS to be from some small country town. And, frankly, I have never ever heard of anyone eating coon...but guess some do somewhere in America. That would be something people out in the backwoods eat, I suppose, but NOT in any city of any size.
No, in Houston--a major American city--the people are more sophisticated and citified than to eat coon.

Finally!!! The real answer!
I too, have gleaned this "knowledge" of racoon eating via another forum.
As someone who resides in New England, and who lives in the country, I can tell you that I have nightly visitors the size of medium dogs...They tend to make "the rounds" in their nocturnal wanderings, in hopes of finding garbage cans that they can pry open, and hence, dine.
I have offered to send some of them as a token offering/Christmas present to a certain someone on one of the other forums. She has lead me to believe that she can create a recipe for "Coon Chowder" as she knows I am from Massachusetts. So my question mirror's that of the original poster:
Can one really create recipes that entail "all things racoon" based soley on where one resides, and what their native culture is based on?

We are having Opossum Stew for supper tonight after the dog treed one this morning in the backyard
Seriously though, NO!!!! I'm a Native Texan and know of NO ONE that has eaten raccoon nor any other animal like Opossums, armadillo, skunk, etc. Now there are some that eat rabbit and squirel but not me. Even in those ranks there are VERY FEW!
I think your friend is pulling your leg and enjoying the fact they have you believing any old stereotype out there and having fun with it. So I'd say the joke is on you.
Now I do know of someone that eats roadkill but they are in California and not Texas.

Once, as a kid at someone else's house, the host claimed we were eating raccoon, but I never knew if it was true or not. Other than that I've never heard of anyone eating any. The most exotic meat I've ever eaten is frog legs and they're creepy.

Well she saw the thread and said it's an East Texas thing. She's from a small town in NE Texas originally. She's also talked about fried squirrel and squirrel stew. I know her really well (or at least I think I do) and know she isn't pulling my leg.
And I have seen her photo ( I think it was her photo) and she's looks normal. Loves to do her hair and nails!
