Algebra in high school back then was just as common as Calculus (or even Pre-Calculus) when I was in high school 10-15 years ago--not very common; only few students, mostly gifted or preparing for technical college majors, took it. (If you want to respond with an Islamaphobic conspiracy theory about Algebra, this isn't the time or the place.)

I took Algebra in high school - it was a required course for everyone, Algebra I and II. If it hadn't been required I would have done my best to get out of it because math was not my strong suit. In a Texas high school (well, two Texas high schools, I attended two different ones because we moved). In the 1960's.

lol Usually when I think about algebra, the old movie Peggy Sue Got Married pops into my mind. I know I always hated algebra.
