I guess that is the crux of my question: are Vidorians blatantly abusive and racist (as past history suggests) or is it more of a case where they would simply prefer to live around other whites. The responses that I have received suggest it is more the latter.
Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I agree with you. From the responses you are getting in this thread it does seem that the latter is the case. I haven't read anything in the thread yet that should rule out the possibility of living and working there. You'll find good and bad people everywhere and if you're one of the good ones (which from your responses you seem like one of the good ones) than I'm sure you'll be able to find friendly and welcoming people there. Trouble usually finds those seeking it.

War Beagle,

On the back woods dangerous places here is my insight. These places were rough a 100 years ago so the meth thing wasn't in play. I am sure though there is some manufacture in these places especially on the Sabine River community. The Neches River area is more backwoods/dueling banjo/Deliverance in nature. A place where people barely use today's modern amenities, live off the land, go to town for basics only(monthly???) ... flour, sugar, dried beans, rice, lard (cooking oils/shortening), tobacco. These folks live off the land (game laws ... huh!!!) much like it was done 100 years ago. This area is more or less dominated by 3-4 families. It is off the beaten path. I've been in there a few times but even I was a bit on edge and I am pretty redneck. Part of the land they occupy is a portion of the Big Thicket Nat'l Preserve.

Devil's Pocket is less known to me as it is over an hour drive from me. Indian Lake is the meth haven.

Here's a CNN story on Vidor: Texas city haunted by 'no blacks after dark' past - CNN.com
Thank You! Vidor's reputation is well deserved and anyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves.

However, I'm thinking the reputation might be worse than the reality given that its reputation is almost poor to the point of being unbelievable.

While I am curious as to the persistence of overt displays of racism in the area, it is not actually my main concern since I am white and it wouldn't affect me personally. What I am primarily curious about is how welcoming are the locals to outsiders? I've lived in the south most of my life and some places can be friendly while others can be pretty cliquish. Also, how safe is it overall in terms of violent crime and property crime?

I would prefer responses either from people that live in the area now or who used to live there. I'm not particularly interested in the views of people who stopped at the Vidor Dairy Queen one time on the way back from the casino, or who's knowledge of Vidor comes from hearsay.

Got any info or just accusations?

Live in Beaumont and commute if you can. Vidor does have a reputation for racism which I have experienced during some of my visits there. Im not sure how it is now, but I felt safer in some of the projects in Port Arthur than I did in Vidor. I actually would recommend certain areas of Port Arthur to live in over Vidor.

That was years ago though. I'm not sure how it today but just from my experiences alone I would live in Beaumont and commute. I dont really care too much for that city or Orange County in general. Just like how some of the folks in SE Texas feel about Port Arthur.

Well I have sat here and read the thread...my family and I are getting ready to relocate to Texas for my husbands job. We are moving from a suburb out side of Philadelphia, Pa. He will be working in Orange and we were/still are thinking of purchasing a home in Vidor. My only concern is one being an outsider...two the area we come from is a city like atmosphere and lots of slang and is a muti-cultural area. Due to their environment my girls have picked some of this "slag" up. My main concern is for my girls and if they will have a hard time being accepted in school. Now, I have spoken with a gentleman from a softball organization in Vidor and I must say the feel I got was warm and inviting. Just not sure where to go. Suggestions or helpful information would be great!

Vidor is fine. If you are working in Orange, other places really close by to consider are
Bridge City - nicer than Vidor, but the entire town was flooded in the last major hurricane so keep that in mind
Orangefield - very 'country' area NW and W or orange with good schools
Little Cypress - has the nicest houses in Orange, but a few of the neighborhoods there are going downhill as the riff-raff from Orange expands it's territory.

I wouldn't worry about the slang. That's everywhere in that area. People can be very accepting there.

Agreed. I moved around a lot as a kid and your kids will pick up on whatever the local slang is pretty quickly. From what I can tell, the slang is becoming standardized pretty quickly anyway, what with all of the kids watching the same shows, talking to each other on the internet and playing video games with each other from all over the place.

Well Vidor has its folks, like others have said up north. Some south too. I *know* someone on Bellard road in Vidor that takes pride in flying a confederate flag in his yard during black history month.

I don't recall ever even driving through Vidor but it can't be all bad. George Jones grew up there.
