No, I know what it means. I just had never heard someone say it before.

It's almost certainly several centuries old and is a common expression in England, sometimes with variations like, "Pot, meet kettle!" or "Something to do with pots and kettles?"

Having said this, I think my parents' generation used it more than I hear it used by members of the two generations following mine.

I heard it very frequently from both my parents and grandparents.

Another similar one: "It's like the pig telling the polecat (skunk) he stinks...." As polecat for skunk was more my grandparents' generation than not, I haven't heard that one as often.

But I hear pot/kettle from time to time from my generation to younger.
