It should be mentioned that there are only 33 cities in that category, so Houston would be more in the middle. Also Chicago is not included because of difference in the way they count rape. So Houston should really be number 11.

Also i found this on the FBI website

Quote:
UCR data are sometimes used to compile rankings of individual jurisdictions and institutions
of higher learning. These incomplete analyses have often created misleading perceptions
which adversely affect geographic entities and their residents. For this reason, the FBI has a
long-standing policy against ranking participating law enforcement agencies on the basis of
crime data alone. Despite repeated warnings against these practices, some data users
continue to challenge and misunderstand this position

^Which leaves out a huge number of dangerous places!
And where is Chicago?
Dallas topped the list a few years back, must have improved the rate or changed up the reporting.

Also, I think the cities report differently and there are other factors overlooked, such as some cities may have areas of "projects" or pockets more than others where much of the crime occurs and it's misleading to generalize to the whole city. The same thing Austin toots as part of the reason for lower crime -- better educated and higher incomes -- Houston also has over San Antonio and El Paso.
