Default Gilmer, Texas

We are thinking of moving to Gilmer, Texas. Has anyone out there ever lived or is now living in Gilmer? What 'feel' does the town have to it? Friendly, nosy or hostile or what? Is it a pretty town?

I like it fine. But I am not from there. Mrs. Phil is. About 6 or 7 generations back. She pretty much scores it as an "anywhere but there," now.

What is your interest? Job? Raising kids there? Retirement? Makes a big difference for if it is a fit for you.

Typical of what I follow of many older East Texas towns, there is an embedded and inbred culture of how things and people should be in their place. Mrs. Phil had me watch Steel Magnolias to understand how the community and families work in the area.

Exclamation gilmer

My husband and I drove through this town as we are looking at moving in that area as well. Everywhere we stopped in that town the people were cranky. I don't want to live where all the people are cranky. Also, There sure are a lot of houses for sale in a town of only 5,000. We will not move there as we still have a daughter with 5 years left in school.

If you have children left in school and are considering moving to the E. Texas area I would say to look at Lindale or one of the other smaller Tyler suburbs.
