McAllen-Edinburg-Mission
Many people I know talk about Mcallen-Ediburg-Mission,Texas MSA as if it was a small town or a border city with nothing to do. But in reality it is a big city the size of El Paso,Texas but spread out into multiple cities. It is a fun place to be with many things to do. I love this city because there is nothing like it in Texas or the nation for that matter. I think that anyone considering moving here should do so and not think twice about it. Would you move here? Why or Why not?
The Mcallen-Edinburg-Mission, TX MSA is ranked 71st largest metropolitan area in the nation and the 6th largest in Texas. In 2006 it had a population of 700,634.
Other Facts:
Fastest Growing Metro in the State of Texas
# 1 in Job Growth in the United States
# 2 Lowest Cost Area to Live in
# 4 in Nation for Job Creation and Retention
# 8 Fastest Growing Metro in the United States
4% Annual Population Growth Rate

Thx for posting this info with all the facts.
Hopefully this will provide some balance to all the bad press this area gets on this forum.

Just to add to your set of facts:
Milken Institute / Greenstreet Partners Best Performing Cities 2007
September 2007
Ross DeVol, Armen Bedroussian, and Soojung Kim
For the third consecutive year, Florida metropolitan areas scored high on the Milken Institute / Greenstreet Partners 2007 Best Performing Cities Index, taking three of the top six spots – including this year’s top-ranked metro, Ocala.
But their hold on the Index loosened slightly as other cities rose in the annual ranking of where America’s jobs are being created and sustained. Nationwide trends influenced many regional shifts, including a rebound in the tech sector (boosting metros in the San Francisco Bay Area, Salt Lake City, Utah and Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas), increasing global trade (pushing Wilmington, North Carolina to 2nd place) and even the effects of migration as a result of Hurricane Katrina (particularly Lafayette and Baton Rouge, Louisiana).
The top 10 performers (with its last ranking, in 2005, in parentheses) of the 200 largest metros:
1. Ocala, Florida (13)
2. Wilmington, North Carolina (59)
3. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, California (10)
4. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona (15)
5. Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida (6)
6. Naples-Marco Island, Florida (3)
7. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas (7)
8. Provo-Orem, Utah (23)
9. Las Vegas-Paradise, Nevada (11)
10. Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina (45)

That's right, McAllen is the 7th best performing city in the US. And someone on another thread told someone to get away from this area as quickly as possible. Ignorance.

Hey Mexico turned into an ocean!
I have family who lives there. They are making a killing as college instructors. Cost of housing is so low you can basically get anything you want as an instructor or professor.
But certain parts of McAllen and Pharr feel strikingly similar to parts of Houston at times.

The metro area is no longer known as McAllen-Edinburg-Mission. The U.S. government changed the MSA name to McAllen-Edinburg-Pharr. However, nothing has changed regarding the fact that the MSA is all of Hidalgo County.

Where and finally! My mom loves that place and lives in the Valley ... is it by the new outlet mall? With all the Winter Texans, I can't believe one wasn't built sooner.
My sister works for a title company in the valley, she's seen Californians buying duplexes in the valley for investment purposes. Also it's rumored that Donald Trump bought a huge piece of beach front and bay front land on the north end of SPI (just north of those Franke homes).

Palm's Crossings has a BJ's Brewhouse and a PF Chang's.
Here's a recent article about this developments affects on the rest of the area:
Palms Crossing won’t pull from other area retail, business people say
Kyle Arnold
October 11, 2007 - 8:31AM
McALLEN — P.F. Chang’s opened at Palms Crossing shopping center to long lines of hungry customers this week.
Just a few weeks earlier, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse drew similar crowds for its grand opening and has continued to serve the masses.
The two national chain restaurants are the first of a slew of new retailers and eateries starting business at Palms Crossing — at Ware Road and Expressway 83 — in the next few weeks.
By Dec. 1, many of the center’s almost two dozen retailers are expected to open, ranging from small boutiques to big-box stores.
“It’s going to really be something,” said Alicia Belvail, the office manager at P.F. Chang’s. “We’ve had a million calls for reservations so far. We could double in size and still be full.”
Retailers Bealls, Babies R’ Us, DSW shoes, Sports Authority, Barnes & Noble, Guitar Center, Ulta and Cavender’s Boot City have signed leases at the center and are expected to open soon, as well as Starbucks and Mimi’s Café.
In the project’s second phase, that could open as soon as fall 2008, Best Buy and Romano’s Macaroni Grill are building locations.
