I've heard before that northern republicans, for example, are more liberal than southern republicans.

so , this made me wonder about republicans in Texas, republicans in mountain states etc.

The GOP here is more conservative than almost all other states on everything except immigration.

My opinion:

Northern Conservatives tend to be socially liberal but fiscally conservative, and free-market business a distant 3rd.

Southern Conservatives tend to be socially conservative primarily, free-market business second, and fiscally conservative 3rd.

Moutain state conservatives tend to be like Northern Republicans. Many of the midwest states allow pot and gay marriage, yet vote primarily republican.

California Republican are free-market business 1st, fiscally conservative a distant 2nd, and socially conservative 3rd.

I think this is hard to gauge. There certainly seems to be a reversion to the current GOP's norms here by the Texas Republicans in power. Before that, they tended to be more moderate on issues such as immigration.

By contrast, Wyoming and some other Mountain West Republicans are a completely different breed. That's more of a "live and let live" kind of Republican who are a lot more focused on individual rights and fiscal conservatism than social conservatism.

This is correct. Northern Republicans tend to be "Rockefeller Republican" or Moderate to liberal Republicans. Think along the lines of Lincoln Chafee. In New York State several Republicans in the State House and Assembly voted in favor of same-sex marriage. They're the least fiscally conservative of the bunch and won't oppose some government spending.

Western/Mountain Republicans in states like Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Washington, ect tend to be mostly libertarian... pro-gambling, pro-marijuana, pro-gun types. I'd differentiate them from Northern Republicans as you'll see many Republicans up north who are in favor of gun control, which would be unheard of in these types. Very pro individual liberty, very fiscally conservative. Think along the lines of Ron Paul or Gary Johnson before he became a Libertarian.

Then you have the morality-driven, religious conservative Southern/Texas/Utah Republicans. Anti-gambling, anti-alcohol, anti-sex ed, vehemently pro-life, pro-prayer in school, pro-creationism ect. They tend to get their conservatism from their religious conviction. Very fiscally conservative, but places social issues on a higher pedestal. Think along the lines of Rick Perry and Jim DeMint.

I believe it's the 3rd variation that is killing the national party.

As a liberal I was going to give TX conservatives a little credit for being less socially conservative and whacko than other deep South Red States polticians, but then along came Ted Cruz.

He'll be a albatross around the neck of the GOP for years. The new Sarah Palin. Can't keep is mouth shut and really has disgusting beliefs that turn off minorities and young people even more than your average Republican politician.
