Which would you consider the safest border town?
I really want to take advantage of living so close to Mexico... But it's a shame that so many of the towns along the border are dangerous.
I've already crossed out Nuevo Laredo from the list.
What are towns that you would consider the "most" safe along the border with Texas in Mexico?
I've heard that Reynosa and Matamoros are alright.

El Paso is safe -- Juarez is not.

Cd. Acuna/Del Rio is pretty safe. We go across there at least once a year while visiting my in-laws. I don't know if I'd want to LIVE in Del Rio, though. It is very remote and isolated. you have to drive 2 hours to San Antonio for decent shopping and medical care. Real estate is pretty cheap in Del Rio.
WHY would you want to live in a border town?

The safest border town is Nuevo Progreso, located due south of Weslaco Texas. Weslaco is more or less exactly in between McAllen and Harlingen. I would also consider Reynosa fairly safe.

OK... for visiting a border town, Progreso or Reynosa are best. They are easy to get to and fairly safe. I still recommend Del Rio/Acuna, but it is a long way away.
Border towns are very different from the rest of Mexico. There will be the usual tourist shopping area (usually close to the bridge), pharmacies and restaurants, then it starts getting into the more "locals" areas. I'd recommend staying in the touristy areas unless you have someone who is familiar with the town as a guide. (My husband knows the back roads in Acuna, and I'd never attempt to drive them without him!)

Mcallen, Texas has a reputation of being safe and the biggest city south of San Antonio with a population of 700,000.

Thanks for that information!
Although, I was asking about cities in Mexico along the border with Texas.
