You may think our list is unusual, but my husband and I have unusual taste lol We don't like sports, fine dining, and high end shopping. We like the weird, historic, and off the beaten path. I'm sure we'll be adding a lot more as we arrive, but these are our must sees so far. Only added a few must visit restaurants that we want to visit. What do you think. We are doing it all in 12 days. Is it too ambitious? Should we add more? lol We are the type that go on vacation and get up at the crack of dawn to fit in as much as possible.

If you are visit the Austin/SA area, then you are near some places worth visiting:

Historic Gruene Texas
Gruene Hall Official Home Page - very old dance hall

Naegelin's Bakery--Quality Baked Goods Since 1868 - oldest bakery in Tx, look for the German Pretzels

Welcome - Wimberley Chamber of Commerce Convention Center and Visitors Bureau - Tx version of Mayberry

Home - Luckenbach - very interesting place in the woods where people just go to chill, think Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings

Stuff at or near Fredicksburg (you could easily spend a few days in Fredericksburg alone):
Fredericksburg Texas Online - Bat Cave Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area
National Museum of the Pacific War - this place is big
Wildflower Farm - Wildseed Farms© - Fredericksburg, Texas - this place is bigger than you think

Big, neat, rock, mind you it is HOT right now:
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Near Houston, in Brenham Tx, you can tour the plant of the National ice cream of Texas
http://bluebell.com/

A word of caution - Kemah is VERY touristy and gets packed even on hot summer nights. Just be prepared to search for parking. It is still fun.

Skip Kemah in Houston and add the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas.

EDIT: The Menger Hotel near the Alamo is worth stopping by to get a drink. They have a cool old-timey pub/saloon.

I know you were talking about zoos in another thread. Maybe go to San Antonio's botanical gardens and Houston's zoo, since both SA and Houston seemed to be recommended for their zoos. I really enjoyed the botanical gardens when we were there over spring break.

Thanks you for the ideas. We are on somewhat of a tight budget so we're trying to balance out free and low cost activities and waiting out the pricey ones to see if we can do them. We wanted to go to Six Flags as well in San Antonio, but husband was diagnosed with a herniated disc last week so that is a no go now. I'm adding more to the list as I read. ONce we come back, I'm going to make a slide show of all the pics and post them here

The Kimbell and Amon Carter are world renowned art museums. The MOMA is no slouch either and all three are within walking distance of each other. You seem to focus on art museums in other cities and these in Ft. Worth are every bit as worthy, if not more so.
