=SVTRay;30747140]I'm sure the Amish across the border in Oklahoma can hook you up. Seriously, I saw where the police was busting the Amish for selling raw unpasteurized milk.
*considering* I am not so much a libertarian that I cannot agree with at least some safeguard levels in terms of what is sold. If the private seller will give a clear warning that there can be risks with drinking fresh, raw (non pasteurized) , milk, then I think that should be sufficient.

What say the rest of y'all?

Anyhow, I had an old timer friend who ran a small dairy, I spent a many of nights shooting the crap while watching him milk cows. I never tried the raw stuff though, just never crossed m mind I guess.
In reflection, that is true of me as well. It just never occurred to me to try it back then!

I think for older Texans, "regular" milk of today is only slightly less watered down than the 2% milk. When I was young, "sweet milk" was milk that, when left to sit in the refrigerator for a few hours, would gather a cap of cream on top of it. The cream had to be scraped off to drink the milk.

Our "sweet milk" came from an old Jersey cow every morning. My dog loved the cream mixed in his Gravy Train. Yep, he was somewhat chubby but he still lived 20 years.

Okay back to buttermilk.

Dumb question, but what does buttermilk taste like? Is it sour? "Tangy" could mean a lot of things.

Imagine a sweet coleslaw compared to sauerkraut. That would be sweet milk compared to buttermilk. But I love both sauerkraut and buttermilk. Not everyone does.

You should try it if you really want to know. You could always cook with what's left if you don't like it.

To me, buttermilk has a similar taste to top-quality storebought or homemade plain yogurt. In fact, they're interchangeable in some recipes.

I would have NO idea as to how sauerkraut compares to sweet slaw. Sauerkraut stinks so bad that it turns my stomach...I've never been able to even taste it.

Lol, Cathy! I never like sauerkraut growing up--in our house, it was dumped out of the can & had red weenies thrown in the pot with it! I've now found that if you buy the good stuff in bags or jars, rinse it, add in some beer or apple cider, cook it with some good smoked sausage for a couple of hours--it's awesome!

Buttermilk does taste like yogurt, or even sour cream.
