Smile Bonham

My husband and I are thinking about moving to Texas and were considering Bonham. I read that Sherman sometimes has flooding and was wondering whether Bonham does as well since it is close to Sherman. Thank you.

I am originally from a town not too far from Bonham and have never heard of any kind of major flooding there. I also think that the flooding in Sherman is a very rare occurrence. I suppose if you get torrential rains for hours on end, then it can happen just about anywhere.

No, no flooding in Bonham...Sherman has had only two floods that I recall in the last 20-25 years and those were just in one section of town, the older part of town.....and those were in very unusually heavy rainfall.

Default Just wondering

if there are any areas of Bonham that my husband and I should stay away from when looking for a house? Certain streets, areas, etc?

Anything south of Sam Rayburn Drive (Hwy 56) is not where you want to be.....unless it's far enough south to be in the country. (Note: if an address says, for instance, "So. 4th St.", that doesn't mean it goes north and south....it means it is in South Bonham. The street numbers start over at the railroad track). Most of the nicer, newer homes are in the north and northwest part of town or in the country (County Club Village off Russell Ave. has a lot of new reasonably priced condo's, town houses, rental duplexes....they are part of a very nice area of beautiful homes.) There are some nice older homes (1960-70) in the NE section of town near the VA Hospital. off E. 9th street to the south.

If I myself were looking for somewhere to live in this area, I would look at one of the nearby small towns in Fannin County. The drinking water and the taxes (and the schools) are much better, and there are good paved roads all over the county. There is also good community water all over the county.

If you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to help.

Default Are you familiar

with streets such as Chestnut and W. 6th and W. 9th Street? Are they in South Bonham? Also, if South 9th Street as example denotes South Bonham would the West addresses be in the western part of town? And if so, is the western part of town better than the southern? Have seen reasonable houses listed on the above-mentioned streets and was wondering. Do you know a way I could tell if any further homes are in South Bonham such as a website I could check? Or perhaps there is some landmark in South Bonham from which I could get the address and then check the distance from the various addresses. Thanks for any help you can give me.

LOL!! West and East really mean they go west and east. It's just South that doesn't mean it goes south....it just means it's south of Hwy 56. All other street addresses are in the north part of town.
South Anything means it's in South Bonham....and those streets are not divided into East and West. I know.....confusing.

Chestnut is in the older part of town. Houses are really mixed in the older part of town....hard to tell by an address what a house might be like. Many of the older houses are being demolished and replaced with some nice homes, so there are lots of different levels of houses in some neighborhoods.

Main Street divides the house numbers, so most houses with an East Anything is east of Main. Main runs north and south beside the courthouse.
The VA Hospital and the local hospital are in the far east end of town; WalMart, the high school, the elementary school are on the far west end of town, jr. hi. is in the middle on Main. The State Prisons are a couple miles west of town.

Hope that helps!

ReJoyce......I saw a new house for sale on Chestnut today - think it may be the one you are looking at on the internet----1012 Chestnut? It's right across the street from the door to my office when I was working at the school.

Default Not the one

but it is close. The one we were thinking about is a vintage 1920's house at 611 Chestnut. If it is still available when we move it would be perfect for my husband and I since we love old houses and it is huge. Our budget is limited and it is in our price range with a newer roof and a newer dual CHA system. Thank you for your continued info. It has been really helpful.
