Thanks for that wonderful experience you have in East Texas. It just seems to be calling me there and nowhere else. I get this feeling it looks exactly like you said. I know there are good and bad in every place but it just sounds like somewhere I want to be.
I talked with a Realtor the other day that told me to go to Daingerfield. That the taxes are a little less there than in other places. Can you give me some info on that? What is the population there. How about shopping. What kind of stores do you have there and gooood eating.
Thanks

Hello, I found this site by looking for Perkison's Jewelry site. The original owner was my Uncle, I think my first cousin has the store now. Anyway I spent the biggest part of my summer vacation from school with my Dad in the Dangerfield/ Lone Star area. We lived on Lone Star lake on the water, it was on the east side. It was so beutiful then I swam in the lake almost everyday. It has been several years since I have been back to Dangerfield, it has sure grown. I remember Dangerfield State Park, It was Beutiful. There was also Lake of the Pines. I wonder if Wacassie's grocery is still opererating out from Lone Star, My dad once lived close to the store. We enough reminising. I will have to make a trip from The Woodlands soon.

We may be moving to Titus Co. TX soon. Can anyone tell us about the area? We are white, but we have one adopted child - Vietnamese - so we are concerned if the area is welcoming to Asians. I know I may be stereo-typing, but in my travels around the country I've often been surprised at the level of under-the-table (or above-board) prejudice that goes on. We are also seeking info on good neighborhoods or areas of Titus County or Mount Pleasant. What's there to do? Are people friendly? Is there good shopping available? Thanks

I understand it's insanely hot and muggy in Orange County and there are hurricanes. It's sparsely populated, and there isn't a Calvary Chapel for roughly 100 miles in any direction (I'm from CA, so this could be a sticking point for me).
But what other social, cultural, economic, geographical, and zoological issues are there?
Thanks in advance for your full candor!

I also went to SFA, and I love Nacogdoches. I would live there in a second! It's so beautiful and maybe a tiny bit less "backwards" than some of the smaller more remote towns because of the university influence.

My pick of East Texas Towns

I havent been everywhere in East Texas, however, I'm becoming much more familiar with the north and southern portions the last three years due to truck driving work. A couple of years ago I spent a few days working in Winnsboro and Quitman. I really enjoyed the tall pines, greenery, and hills. I've heard that Gilmer is really amazing, and this coming from a more than one friend I have (who eats up travelin like me). I also like Tyler, Rusk, Alto, Douglass, and Nacogdoches town areas. In fact I am a truck driver. I lived in Huntsville several years ago, and love the pines and green hills.
Yesterday, I left Houston heading North on 59 to Corrigan, TX where I stopped to get some directions. This town was really nice. Big rolling hills, beautiful pines, and greenery. BTW, I love the pines that are BROAD at the base of the trunk, instead of the tacky lookin twiggy (at the trunk) pines seen in some low level areas. Anyway Corrigan was really nice, though as I got deep into the davy crockett national forest on 287 going towards Crocket, I can't tell ya how much I enjoyed it. I usually drive the speedlimit, but just felt like cruisin slow, with the window down on a crisp fall day (like yesterday) I could smell the pine! The trees were shading the road and I loved the town of GROVETON right in the heart of the forest, anybody else? It was depressing when all at once (between Groveton and Crockett about a mile before Houston county or less) the terrain just changed, and it looked like central texas immediately. There was definately no doubt when I was out of the national forest. However, Crockett was really nice (first time Ive been there) and it got east TX lookin again around this area.
Anyone have any PICKS for towns in East Texas that have a by gone era feel, are surounded in beautiful scenery, and anything else you might add?

I love Nacogdoches County, lived in Douglass for 2 years. Great school , beautiful tall deep piney woods. If I had my choice I would be there now .

property taxes
Could anyone tell me what city in Texas has the lowest property taxes? We are planning to retire in the near future and would like to move to Texas...our kids live in Houston ( which has the highest property taxes). Thanks
