Chevron Purchases Downtown Block

Chevron has grabbed another block in downtown, for future growth (another tower/HQ relocation to Houston).

Quote:
Chevron Corp., which last month said it was putting plans to build a 50-story office tower downtown on-hold, had recently purchased another parcel nearby.

that is great news! there have been so many rumors of oil and gas companies moving up north to Spring/The Woodlands/Conroe, and Chevron was thrown around a few times.. with the tower put on hold people were afraid Chevron could be second guessing downtown and considering a move to the suburbs. this new purchase is a sure sign that they are committed to downtown.
it does make me wonder though, with Chevron already owning the land planned for the new 1600 Louisiana tower, and the block to the east of 1500 that Chevrons daycare is currently on is bookmarked for a future 4th tower, how big of a complex is Chevron planning? surely this wouldnt be the site of a 5th tower? are there even enough Chevron employees in the US to fill 5 towers? at some point im assuming corporate HQ relocation is bound to happen, bringing the last couple thousand from San Ramon.. but that would only be 4 towers. unless the 5th block is for something boring like a parking garage for the future expansions. i wonder if Chevron has considered plans with Shorestien (or whoever) to eventually take over the ExxonMobile tower as well? now im just scheming.. heh

looks like the crane is starting to go up for Hines' 609 Main tower.. hopefully it doesnt take too long to deconstruct the Texas Tower.

and heres an article from december about the new Trinity Terrace tower in Ft Worth. it will be 23 stories, with multiple skybridges, including one on the 17th floor. sounds very interesting..

Boom Town - The Architect's Newspaper

Boom Town
Edmonds International-designed 58-story mixed-use tower and plaza may soon rise in downtown Midland, Texas.

12.04.2013
Aaron Seward

Quote:
...The 869-foot-tall tower is rhomboid in plan with a perimeter diagrid structural steel framing system and a transparent glass facade. A solar shading system protects the western and southern faces of the otherwise clear envelope from the powerful West Texas sun.

From the bottom up, the development includes 53,500 square feet of retail in a sunken level that is open to the sky, a 198-room hotel, 230,460 square feet of residences, 564,000 square feet of office space, and a sky lounge and spa capping things off. Considering that the building would be twice as tall as Midland’s next-tallest structure, the first floor of offices, the 28th, would feature 360-degree views that easily clear the surrounding rooftops.

By packing most of the program into one tall tower, the architects were able to free up 80 percent of the site for a public plaza with a reflecting pool and an accessible green roof that tops a ballroom and convention center. The project also includes five levels of underground parking with 2,920 spaces.

...Meyer continues to court tenants for the project, and is asking for 10 to 15 year commitments. “It’s progressing really well,” he said. “We’re seeing a strong demand for the tower. We’re currently in talks with some hotels. Some have heard of Midland, some haven’t.”

Houstons wildly popular downtown residential initiative program has been even more successful than anticipated.. they have almost reached the 2,500 unit cap, 2 and a half years before the program is set to end! they announced the program back in 2012 and it goes through June of 2016. the city is currently working on raising the 2,500 unit cap so that they can provide incentives to even more residential developments in downtown.

(for those of you unaware, downtown Houston had approximately 2,500 residential units before the residential initiative program began in 2012. the fact that were [soon to be More than] doubling the amount of residents downtown in just a few years is incredible.. if we keep up the pace we could easily add another 2,500 units between now and June 2016)

Yep.. Reports are coming in that Skyhouse will build a second tower in Houston, this time in the River Oaks area.
I'm a little surprised to hear of a second one so soon (the first one isn't even completed yet), and would have expected it to go in Uptown rather than River Oaks, but word is it may be just across 610 from Uptown.
