Most of the cowboy types I know say "they" instead of "there".....i.e. "They's no way I'll do that!"

But if it really needs to be done.......dreckly a good ol' boy will go ahead and do it!! (dreckly=directly, eventually, by and by).

Most folks who live outside of Texas don't understand that 'hi' is a two syllable word. . .

Hey y'all..

I was just going thru some old threads and got to reading this one again. I am really surprised that the term "coke" never came up as one that can be difficult to translate to non-Texans/Southerners. For many if not most of us "coke" is simply the generic term for any kind of soft drink. In fact, let me pause here a bit to post a link to a great map on the subject of what people in various parts of the country call it:

http://popvssoda.com:2998/countystats/total-county.html

A lot of us probably have some good stories on this subject, but the best I ever heard was from a very good friend of mine who, quite a few years ago, went out to California (are you listening, Gretchen? Hee hee...couldn't resist! ), to visit his uncle and cousins. The uncle had moved out there many years ago, so the cousins were natives of California.

Anyway, the cousins took him to some local hangout and when ordering soft drinks, my friend asked the waiter 'What kind of cokes do y'all have?"

Good lord, the way my buddy told it, you would have thought that he had asked the question in Greek! The exchange that followed, with neither of them having a clue as to what the other was talking about, nor why the same were being so dense, was hilarious. FINALLY, I think, one of the cousins, who had spent a little time in Texas, figured out the problem and played "translator"

This has got to be the funniest thread on the forum. We watched "A Tuna Christmas" last year, and didn't really understand what the actors were saying until the second half of the play. And even then, not entirely

I so much prefer the slower-paced conversational style of the south. Always better to talk slow and think fast

Default Texas Hick Talk

I read a joke once from a Texas Hick who wanted to make someone from LA laugh:

Texas Hick Talk:

C M ducks?
M R not!
S M R!
C M web feet?

Translation:

see 'em ducks?
'em are not!
yes 'em are!
see 'em web feet?

More correct Translation:

Hey, check it out see those ducks?
Those are not ducks!
Yes they are!
See their webbed feet?

"Don't rush me, I'll work cheaper."

"A day cheap and a dollar short."

"I'm so mad I could eat ice cream."

"Don't give me any more backtalk, or you'll find yourself into the middle of next week."

"Gollydogs" and "Jumpin' catfish"

"I'll make us up a mess of greens and corn pone."

"I'm gonna burn your hiney good if you don't stop that!"

"Her b*tt is so big, you couldn't hit it with a big red apple."
