Anyway, I feel like it is our Texas obligation, when sharing hard to translate words/slang/terms that we should at LEAST (for our yankee friends and/or new neighbors) provide the translation.

Acting up: Throwing a fit

Hmmm. Or does "throwing a fit" need a translation too?
"Pitching" a fit, TexasReb!

I've had people out of state make fun whenever I'm not understanding what someone says and I ask "do what?" Is this just a Texas thing, too?

I have had the same experience, BlueSkies. Good question!

Here's one:

"up the road aways"

That can translate to anywhere from a 5 minute to a 1.5 hour drive.
If you are in Austin..Waco is "up the road aways"
If you are at your house looking up the block at the mailboxes then the mailboxes are "up the road aways".

Love that generality

Do what is southern slang according to the Urban Dictionary.
Urban Dictionary: do what?

If any of y'all have ever had the 'pleasure' of being around a truly spoiled bratty two year old for any extended time, then I know you've surely experienced the reality of what 'pitchin' a hissie fit' is all about!

It'll 'sure enough' make you want to take off 'over yonder' and not look back!

Now, if you're needin' directions on how to reach a certain destination here in Texas, wal, that's anuther story! There's the detailed version such as: wal, you go down this here road for a spell, till you come to......(as I said, detailed, this could stretch on for quite a spell ) or there's the shorter version which goes like this....wal, if you go on down this road to the next crossroad, turn right, that'll take you right on in to xxxx town. Now there's a Texaco station on the left just as you come into town and old Joe Bob can tell you exactly how to git where you want to go from there.

Now, if you're needin' to know long long it's gonna take you to git from here to there, wal, purt near 30 or so minutes, more or less. Now, 'as the crow flies', it's bout 15 or so minutes.

Y'all be kerful and come back soon now, hear.

haha, I remember that most of the directions I got when we first moved to Dallas included at least one reference to "where the x used to be". If I knew where something USED to be, I'd probably know where what I wanted to currently find is.

The kick your ass thing got comments in Missouri and north. It was pretty common in Oklahoma, as I recall.

On the flip side, in Wisconsin, they end every other sentence with 'yet' whether it makes sense there or not. My boyfriend asked for an example and I told him I couldn't give him one because it was so far from being correct that I couldn't conceive of how they used it. Maybe I'm prejudiced, but I find the Texas slang words quaint but easy to figure out how to use, once you understood the meaning.

ROFL..boy does that bring back memories of when I first moved to Texas with directions.

At the time all I thought of was "do these people not know street names?"
But now I tend to do it myself..seeing the HEB at the corner to make a left is so much easier than trying to read the teeny tiny street signs.

Here in Austin you sometimes get "where the old airport used to be". Now not one newcomer has any clue where that was :0
