Many other cars were passing me, and going much quicker, but with out of state plates, I got stopped, ticketed, and asked about drugs etc... The officer also stated that he had clocked me at 72, then proceeded to write the ticket (didn't notice till later) for 77mph. Gave me problems about the insurance on the rental, wanted to know why I was in Texas (my father is in the hospital and may not make it), and was just snappy and rude. I have not recieved a ticket of any sort in over 16 years (last one was jaywalking in Dallas), I have an unblemished driving record, and am a manager for a very large corp, so it is not like I look like some sort of young hoodlum or troublesome type. Just your basic small town speed trap targeting travelers, so bewary. There are many of these all over texas, and out of state plates, as well as an accent for you, could be problematic. So be carefull, and stay safe. I lived in TX for many years, and love going back whenever I can, you are sure to enjoy yourself.
Today (8/7/07) we were driving on 287 passing through Hedley. I slowed down to 55 to go through town and then sped up to 60 at the end of town when the sign said 60. Going around the turn I saw a sign that said 70 (the usual speed on 287) and sped up accordingly. Soon I was stopped by the Hedley constable who said I was going 74 in a 60 mph zone. I could stay here and contest (my husband and I are retirees living in Florida and just passing through) so have no choice but to pay the ticket ($175) or stay here in TX and hire an attorney to fight the ticket. I'm sure I wasn't going more than 65. So be careful on 287, these small towns are targeting out of state drivers (at the next town there was a California driver stopped).
