I'm always amused by his photo ops at the dude ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he dresses in blue jeans and holds up a chain saw, saying he's got to go out and "clear brush." Yes indeed, a "real Texas rancher"...NOT.
I have to admit though, I was impressed when Cheney shot that lawyer in the face down at King Ranch. If he'd shoot a few more, I think it would increase his popularity.

HAHAHAHAHA CLASSIC!
What's that old one-liner joke? Q: What do you call 20,000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A: A good start!
Or...Q: If you are driving down some Texas highway and see an indesribable mess of blood and guts, how do you know if it was a skunk or a lawyer? A: If it was a skunk it will not smell so bad and there will be skid marks...
With my apologies to the Texas Bar Association...

"Stuck in an era"? What does that mean?

I'm sure y'all mean well but there are going to be people of different stripes everywhere you go, people so-called "stuck in an era" or "behind the times", granted possibly moreso in Texas/the South and/or rural areas. It's not always a bad thing. Live and let live. Please don't go to the mistake of taking the trouble to move here and then trashing the state!

This native & lifelong Texan agrees that a lot of Texans ARE far behind the times, plain and simple. But I agree - live and let live. If someone wants to be ignorant, that's his own choosing. But when you look at the whole state, these people are in the minority. You'll encounter it more in the BFE/Podunk type areas where some people haven't traveled more than 100 miles from home, and some families have been rooted in the areas (many times in poverty) for multiple generations. I'll bet this is no different than any other state, though!
Now if you stick with the cities (and most suburbs), you won't find it too often. Though I will say even in the big cities, you may notice what seems like a bt of a disregard for the environment relative to other large cities in the US. I personally think too many of us take our ''wide open spaces'' for granted, myself included, but that's another topic.

I side right down the line with you on this one, Miss Blue!
I have never quite understood that (very often "yankee") mindset which associates "progressive" with a better way of living and thinking. Especially in terms of what actually manifests, as time marches on, in the name of progressive and enlightened. HaHa! Is the quality of life REALLY better in San Fransico and New York City than that in Jefferson, Texas or Florence, Alabama?
"Behind the times" is another good one that always gives me a good yuk around the corn-likker jug and cracklins'! Yesssiree Bob! It is a horrible thing to be behind the times! After all, one might miss out, for instance, on the popularity of radio stations playing such soul-moving lyrics as "hey you 'ho, lemme see, if you don't do me, I break 'yo knee..."
But seriously...back to the point...what, when it comes down to it, makes one "ignorant"? Is it a lack of formal schooling and/or a knowledge of life much beyond ones own locale? If so, I would agree that, yeah, in the aggregate, people in Bowie, Texas or (wherever else in the small town South) might be less familiar with Faust or Bernard Shaw or Karl Marx' Das Kapital than the SF Literary Society.
But what they CAN do...and got LOTSA smarts on, is...just to name a few... predict the weather, raise well-mannered kids, know the difference in WISDOM and book learnin' -- and naturally be the salt of the earth...
And I'd rather eat fried chicken and grits and drink beer with 'them folks, and learn from what they have to say...than sip wine with the Fifth Avenue or Haight-Asbury crowd any damn day of the week!

TexasReb, you make a good point. A great one in fact. But then you go ahead and spoil it by talking crap and generalizing about New York just like you are accusing them of doing. All I am saying is that you don't have to put down New York to get across your love of Texas. I think that if everyone learned that lesson, these could be much more productive.

Then it'd be really neat if people could love New York without putting down Texas, wouldn't it?
