Default Your Texas Dream Home

My fellow Texans, I have a question within a question for y'all. If you've never custom-built your home but had a dream of what you'd like your house to be like, what would it be? Or if you have achieved the dream of custom-building your home and you love your home and it's everything you've ever dreamed of, can you share that experience with us? And let me hasten to add this just to sweeten and spice things up: Where in Texas would you like to build your dream home if you can?

I know this is a bit deep, but let's see if we can have a little fun with this. Now, let's gather around that computer campfire, marshmallows and all, and see if we can kick this can around a little bit. I've got some ideas of what I want my dream home to be........ but I'll give you those details a little later. For now, gang, it's your turn. Your Texas dream home: What could it be and where could it be?? Let 'er rip!

Something kinda out in the country, but still kinda close to a major metro. Fifty acres, a few horses and other animals. An older home, at least fifty years old, nothing too big, nothing too small. Maybe 4-5 bedrooms tops, and a couple bathrooms.

I would want to utilize windmills and solar panels for power AND have my own well so I don't have to give so much of my money to the utility companies.

Default My dream home....

would be in far west Texas, near Alpine. It would be high on a hill, with a 360 degree view of the mountains. Adobe, of course, with each room having French doors opening to a central courtyard. The courtyard would have a fireplace and outdoor kitchen, and large doors that would open to frame a beautiful view of Cathedral Mountain or Mt. Ord. Inside, lots of natural wood, saltillo and slate. Big windows to let in natural light. A water catchment system and passive solar design. Kiva fireplaces. I'd want at least 10 acres and a good road. A terraced hillside with bird houses, feeders and hummingbird-attracting flowers.

Of course, when we finally do retire to Alpine sometime within the next two years we probably won't build. We'll look for something as close to the dream home as we can find. We've spent enough time in Texas to know that as long as we are in far west Texas, any home will be our dream home.

Thanks for asking. This was fun!

I would build a stone house, light tan colored, with a green metal roof and lots of glass, cathedreal ceilings, and open spans. 2500 ft2 would be fine. Two acres in the NW corner of the Panhandle is where I would want it. It would be on the highest elevation possible, and the house would face south.

I like a lot of different styles, choosing one would be hard. I like Victorians, just not the overly gaudy gingerbread style. I also like prairie, mid-century, craftsman, and colonial. IMO nothing says famhouse like a colonial or prairie. so it be one of the two. I'd love to have the old time leaded glass windows, and a wrap around porch.

It probably go for east Texas because I'm more of a fan of trees and forests than I am of deserts and mountains.

If I custom-build, I'd like to have a Spanish-style villa, two-story, with large kitchen and at least one large bath space. The living room would be open-level from the second floor (in other words, high). My yard landscaping would be all-tropical, with palm trees, and a few yuccas for a little southwestern flavor. I'd like to have it closer to the Texas Gulf Coast (I'm thinking the Katy area if the job offer were right).

Well, since this is my love and passion, here goes.

I would love for it to be a big single story but I do love my big circular staircase in the entry so to have that I would do a two story. I like the Hill Country, Prarie style and French Country looks. I want a HUGE porch. Side drive coming from the front to the first of 3 garages. This garage would be for our "daily drivers". The two other garages would house my husband car collection which once we build this HUGE garage he could add to it - this would be the "show" garage all nice and clean. The 3rd garage would be the working garage for him to pull a car in to work on it, house bikes, lawn equipment, etc. For the main garage I want a door right into the HUGE mudroom and a door to the backyard. I want a nice sized laundry room. For the living areas I want a nice sitting area by the front door like I have now (the old "parlor" feel for someone to sit real quick if they stop by). The family room, kitchen and eating area would be one HUGE great room w/ a fireplace in the breakfast room along w/ one in the family room. I want a countertop bar area for the kids to use to eat breakfast or snacks. A walk in bar w/ a mini fridge and all of my barware set up for my bartender friend to make drinks for out get togethers. Master bedroom and bathroom I want to face the backyard w/ LOTS of windows (I want LOTS of windows throughout the house). I want a door to a back porch. Fireplace in the master w/ a small sitting area. Kitchen to be right off the mudroom and backyard for easy access and hauling in groceries. Oh, a door from the kitchen area to the side porch at the driveway. HUGE back patio some covered areas some not. I want an outdoor cabana w/ bathroom, kitchen and fireplace all by the pool and LOTS of landscaping. A good place to hang my hammock too not just the one to lay in but the chair hammocks too. I guess if I do a two story the kids rooms can be upstairs. I want a second set of stairs from the back of the house that is right by the laundry room (have this now and totally LOVE IT!). Kids rooms good sized to hold all of their stuff so it does not feel cramped and plenty of room for them to play on the floor and then put their stuff up. Window seats, love'em. Play room for them to set up their toys that take a long time to set up and they can leave out for awhile. Game room for the other toys like the hockey table, pool table, pinball machine, etc. I want the kids and their friends to want to come to our house so that I know what is going on . Of course the decor would be Dallas Stars . Media room, bigger than the one we have now with 3-4 rows of nice leather theater seating. Mini kitchen in there too. I also want the leaded glass as I have lots of it now and LOVE IT! Double front doors. OH.......... and HUGE and I mean HUGE walk in double door closet that I can literally put my Christmas tree on rollers and wrap it decorated and all and roll that baby right in there and out.

Hmm, I'm sure there are plenty more things but that is the top right now.
