Hello everyone! This is my first post and hopefully this is the right place for this question.

I am planning to go on a trip for 4-6 months through Central America and I don't really feel like paying for car insurance while I am gone as it will just be sitting in the driveway at my mom's house with no one using it.

My insurance renewal is due in 2 weeks. My registration/inspection will not expire until November 2014.

Basically I want to know what I have to do if I am not going to have it insured. Do I need to register it as a Non-Operational vehicle in Texas? Or can I just forgo paying the insurance, have it sit in the driveway, and renew my insurance policy upon returning?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have a fine day y'all.

Blissings,
Ryan

Well, as long as it is registered, you don't have to do much of anything, I don't think; however, when you do decide to get insurance again, they will charge you as if you are a first-time insurance buyer - i.e., they will charge you a lot extra for the first year or so. It may be worthwhile to keep it insured.....

Unless it gets stolen while you are gone?

Why not sell it then buy when you get back?

Your registration is good till November so that's okay and leave it alone.

If you cancel your insurance I assume that the vehicle will be parked in a garage to protect it and yourself and just left out in the open ??

If you cancel your insurance its called a lapse and getting it reinstated when you get back will be higher.

Car insurance companies don’t look kindly upon lapses.

Id buy bare minimum insurance to cover theft if its going to sit there. if its not on the road and its a junker that nobody will take I wouldnt bother insuring it.
