This is not a knock against Houston dining. I know it is good. But Houston has tons of mediocrity to offset the good stuff.

Houston doesn't have a single brewpub. Not one!
Are you kidding me???

Houston has the best food in the state and it's not even close. Variety, quality, and price are all better than in any of the other metros.

Austin and the surrounding areas have the best BBQ, by far. Not only the type but variety of styles.

DFW? I honestly don't know what DFW does best in terms of food but I've had excellent steaks there. I've had good Korean BBQ there too.

Both Austin and DFW really lack in the Cajun/Creole department relative to Houston though which kills it for me.

I feel that Austin is the clear winner "Texas BBQ" aka brisket. I'm less impressed by the other variations offered there. Most people feel that Dallas' edge is in fine dining. I have no argument against that. I don't fault either city for lacking in the Cajun/Creole department, since Houston's relation to South Louisiana gives us an obvious advantage.

I certainly don't fault them for not having the same breadth and variety of Creole/Cajun and it's definitely a location thing. I also agree that DFW probably does have the better high-end dining (Houston is really just starting to grow in that department).

But since I'm not rich and I'm betting most of us aren't, Houston has a lot more to offer for regular people. Of course if you want to drop some serious coin on a really high end meal, I'd definitely think Dallas would have the edge there.

I'd also go with Houston given the excellent offerings in American, Mexican, South American and pretty much every kind of Asian cuisine imaginable. Austin does have Houston beat on the BBQ front though.

I don't know. Houston keeps me pretty fed and happy, in this area. I'm more of a pork ribs man than a brisket man, though, so that's likely why.

I'm more into ribs too, but I still prefer Austin here.

Well actually, if we're talking about ribs I prefer Memphis actually, but that's neither here nor there!

I hate to say it but "right on" when it comes to Memphis BBQ. DAyum!!!!!

Bottom line for me is this though - overall, the state of Texas has one of the best local cuisines around, with it's mix of cultures. Add the diversity of our huge metro areas, and well...you can get good food just about any place in this state. Our large cities have more good places to eat than any of us could probably ever get around to visiting!

I lived in Houston during a few years they had a central renaissance of sorts (around 2000) and my experience was that they already kind of were going through that... just never got the national recognition/attention like Austin does now.

Please give examples of this fine or high end dinning edge that Dallas has. What restaurants are we comparing? Is Underbelly in Houston "fine Dinning" Pass and Provisions ect.

Where are the ribs and overall southern barbecue choices in Austin that outdo Burn's, Gatlin's, or the numerous shacks around town?
