I (23 yr./male) just acquired my BA in "Mechatronics Engineering" from a university in Jordan. Mechatronics engineering is not popular in the US as it is in Europe. It basically integrates the mechanical, control, and embedded elements of today's systems. I have permanent residency in the US and chose Texas as a possible candidate to work and live. I have several questions regarding this

1) What cities in Texas have the most concentration of engineering jobs?

2) What are my chances of getting one (considering that I have obtained mine from a foreign country and with no experience)?

3) If my chances of being hired as an engineer are slight, what are my chances of having a technical job that pays above the minimum wage?

Thanks guys. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

1) Most likely Houston>Dallas>San Antonio>Austin

2) No idea on the reputation of your university/degree, so it is hard to say. Not sure on your work status, do you need a sponsor for a work visa?

3) TCEQ would likely be a possibility, or some other similar state job. Not high paying for engineering, but probably 35-40k per year starting salary.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm a green card holder. The university at which I studied is the oldest and considered the top in Jordan (middle east). However, I'm not sure about its reputation internationally.

Look real hard at the Houston area. Many large oil corps have offices there, and many of them are quite experienced with hiring from a world wide talent pool. Open your mind to some possibilities that might not be specific to engineering, like operations or instrumentation either offshore or in refineries. In addition to the larger companies, be sure to look at all the smaller players and contractors in the area.

Many of these jobs pay a solid living wage and will open opportunities to gain experience and advancement that might fit what you are looking for.
