Seadrift Texas Info
Hey folks, My name is Brie, I usually hang out on the Wallacetown thread, but now I need some info if possible.
I am looking for a small town on the Gulf, AWAY from large cities, where I don't have to speak Spanish to be understood by most of the people in the area. (WHY I live in Salt Flats, Texas).
I would like to build a 25 to 30 foot houseboat on site at a local marina, launch it, and live aboard it December through Febuary, when it is colder than
suits my fancy in Salt Flats, (in the Cornudas/Dell City area).
I Google Earthed the town, know where the local airstrips are, (my other passion), and noticed several marinas both from the Google Earth photos, and from the town's website.
Is there anyone here who knows the area? I would sure love a heads up on it. Brie

What about the Rockport area? It's on the coast and lots of people speak English. It's nearby to Corpus, but not too close.

I have been to Seadrift many a time, but just for a short period each time. It is the end point for the Texas Water Safari. There is a plaque at the base of the flag pole by the waterfront that marks the official end point. If you are down there in June, check out the race finsih ( www.texaswatersafari.org)
Anyway, it is a very slow paced, small town. I am sure you will be fine not speaking spanish. I am sure there are quite a few bilingual residents, but I have never noticed any issues.
I just looked at the website for Sea Drift ( http://www.seadriftchamber.com/), or the one I assume you went to. Therea re not a lot of pictures, so understand that this is a typical small, fishing town. Not much in the way of fancy to be found, and quite weather worn.

Slow sleepy fishing town
Hey Trainwreck, that is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Because it is a shrimping town, no one will be looking down on my friend and I for building
a houseboat (with a holding system that conforms to USGC regulations), within sight of their 200,000 dollar motoryacht.
By the way, my refusal to learn Spanish is not as racist as it might sound. I already speak German, (Ich bin halbes Deutch), Koine Greek, the language that the New Testament was written in, and Samoan, which I learned while I lived in Samoa for two years. I just don't have sufficent brain cells remaining to learn still another language, so I will just be lazy, and speak my mother tongue when I'm in America. Brie

We used to have a bay house in sea drift, we sold it because of the all the pollution in the bay. Sea Drift is a tiny town with nothing in it.

There are only like 1400 people in the entire city. Seadrift is a quaint little place.. with its own charm. But there is nothing there. Most people have to drive to Port Lavaca or up to Victoria TX for any of their shopping needs. I have been told that birding and fishing are fantastic in Seadrift. There is a nice park on the water there.. and I have also been told that you can get property there rather cheep.
Seadrift reminds me of what Gulfport and Biloxi MS used to be.. a small fishing community.
Seadrift is mostly white, or was the last time I was though there.. that was like 3 years ago. Things could have changed greatly since then. So I don't think the Spanish thing will be too bad.. Port Lavaca on the other hand was largely Hispanic, so there you may need to know some to get by. Victoria is a pretty city... also small.. but not as small as Seadrift.
I think you may enjoy it there.. its a way laid back area, and runs at a much slower pace.
Good luck.. and happy journeys! I too love the Texas Gulf Coast!
If you want to see a real pretty place, drive down to port O'Connor. When we went drove though Seadrift we were on our way to there.. its a awesome place.

I'm not trying to join the local country club, I just want to be able to build my houseboat where you don't NEED to belong to a country club to be allowed in the front gate of the marina.
Once the boat is built, I will probably move it to Rockport, and tie it up to a slip with power and water.
The time that I am down there, probably 25% of the time, I will be anchored somewhere in the ICW, but out of the channel. Brie

Brie, may I ask?
Are you intending to build from scratch, or re-build an existing hull?

I'm going to build from scratch. I have a set of plans for a really nice 28
footer. Brie

I'm a big fan of Port Lavaca as a vacation spot and I checked out Seadrift on my last visit to PL. It's definitely a tiny town with not much there. I spent a couple of hours in that park. It's a great place to sit and stare at the water.
Personally, I prefer to have enough commerce in the place I live so that I can get whatever I want whenever I want it. Seadrift was not that kind of place.
