Because it's a small market. 37th largest in the country. In the NBA, it is looked at as a small market franchise. Same thing with the NFL. It's a reason why SA is a long way away from getting an MLB team.

Media markets. The NFL looks at media markets. San Antonio is about the 25th biggest MSA, but it has a small media market, dwarfed by Houston & Dallas. New Orleans has an NFL team even though it has a smaller MSA because is has a larger overall media market.

Buffalo, NO, Jacksonville are both smaller in pop and tv markets, but have decent sized media markets.

As the days go on, I wonder why Jacksonville was chosen over San Antonio...

Maybe Jacksonville was booming 20 years ago and the relocation was based on speculation. I think an NFL team would do good in San Antonio. I think they could take some Cowboy fans away from booming Austin and the rest of South Texas. San Antonio's TV Market is already bigger than Jacksonville's.

Other things to consider:
  • Florida with 19.5 million has 3 teams vs Texas's 2 with 26.4 million
  • Ohio with 11.5 million has 2 teams as well
  • Cowboys are most valuable team and Texans are #5
  • In 2011 the Cowboys & Texans were 1st and 9th teams with most attendance
  • Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, & Miami were 24th, 27th, and 31st in attendance
  • Even though state populations don't mean much, it's well known that Texans are really proud of their state and would easily support a 3rd football team. Without a doubt the state's most followed sport.
  • The state has been booming for years and there is no indication it will slow down in the next decade.
  • San Antonio has already proven it's support to it's pro teams with the Spurs

What you fail to realize is that it doesn't really matter how large the media market is in any given NFL host city. That is because the primary cash generator for the various teams is television revenue. And television revenue in the NFL is shared such that smaller market teams are given a more equal share of all that money and have the opportunity to be successful and compete with teams from larger markets. Myth's such as San Antonio is too small for the NFL, there isn't enough corporate support for the NFL and the media market is too small etc, etc are just that, myths. Myth's that so many people around here fall prey to because of the fact that SA has yet to land an NFL franchise but one day will.

Rest assured that all of you brainwashed pessimists will finally be believers in San Antonio's ability to support NFL football once the Raiders or some other team relocates here and succeeds. And once that happens, because it will, I wonder what all you doomsayers will complain or whine about then when it comes to pro sports in SA?

No... no, it DOES matter. Biloxi, Mississippi isn't getting a team anytime soon. The Bills, Jaguars, and even the Saints are or were very close to moving at some point. Memphis couldn't keep the (at the time) Oilers and St. Louis is having some trouble right now.

But I, like many people, do believe that S.A. is 2nd in line to L.A. to get a team. Whether you agree with that or not, the NFL will be working harder to get a team there before getting a team in San Antonio, even if the latter happens first.

Yeah, it's truly puzzling why Jacksonville was chosen over San Antonio. San Antonio's MSA and TV market is larger than Jacksonville's. In Florida, the Orlando MSA is almost twice the size of Jacksonville's and Orlando is also in a larger TV market. I doesn't even make sense that Orlando was passed over. I assume the Jaguars owner just simply got a sweetheart stadium deal in Jacksonville.

Here's my source for the top 100 TV markets:

Also an important note. After Hurricane Katrina, the average crowd attendance when the Saints played at the Alamodome was something like 62000. Fairly impressive.

"Fairly" impressive?

That's only 3,000 less than the stadium's capacity.
