Literly hundreds of south eastern truck drivers pass there everyday. If a person opened a restaurant that served biscuits & saw mill gravy for breakfast, southern fried chicken soaked in lemon juice and onion/bacon flavor and dipped in pancake batter for the KFC type taste.supper buffet and truck parking.A person could net profit 2 grand a week after overhead I bet in pecos or van horn either one

I cannot relate at all to the desire to live in far west Texas. But I agree with the people who say that Van Horn is better than Pecos. Pecos is a disaster area --- they should just abandon it.
You mentioned Lordsburg, NM, which is a much better choice than either of those Texas towns. And if you want a dry climate and good prices in Texas but not so desolate and remote, look into Ozona, Sonora, and some other spots east of Van Horn.
Also, you might want to check out some of the eastern New Mexico towns like Artesia, Carlsbad and Roswell. Very dry, colder and windier in winter but not quite as brutally hot in summer. Most important, though, they're all a quick drive from the beautiful mountains around Cloudcroft and Ruidoso.

Trust me those New Mexico towns are just as hot. But, the beauty of west texas is that after the sun goes down, it cools down nicely, unlike Sonora ,Ozona etc , where the humidity is higher.

Good point about the nighttime temps. No question about it, when the sun sets in the humid zones you don't get much relief. In dry areas you feel it quickly and it can be heavenly to get that comfortably warm, dry air as relief from the blistering heat when the sun is up. Great for being outdoors in the evening!
The part of your post I kinda disagree with is that west Texas is really isolated and far from anything different from itself. Once you get into New Mexico, you at least have some choices within an hour or two from wherever you are. You've got lots of mountains and much more variety, and I think that's a major bonus. But I choose to live in central Texas so obviously there must be something I prefer here cuz there's no way I'm moving to Roswell, Las Cruces or Artesia in spite of my praise for those cute little cities.

OUCH! Pecos is NOT as bad as everyone here is making it seem! I have lived in Pecos for over 6 years, and like it. I am not hispanic...and it doesn't bother me that I am in the minority. I'm not sure where you got your information, but the schools do not teach at a lower level to accomodate hispanics...they offer the exact same curriculum as every other public school system in the state of Texas. There is no "national average" for TAKS testing because it is only a statewide test. The Pecos school system has plenty to brag about. Just check out their website.
On another note...every town or city in Texas has it's good things and it's bad things. You just have to open your eyes. Don't hate...appreciate! Pecos has many positive things, for instance...1) The West of the Pecos Rodeo. The world's first and the largest outdoor rodeo in Texas. It's PRCA sanctioned and the best cowboys in the world ride there every year. It puts the Odessa and Big Spring pro rodeos to shame. 2) Pecos Cantaloupe. Granted...you can buy them anywhere...but not fresh out of the field the day they're picked. 3) Location. It's close enough to take day trips to Big Bend National Park, Fort Davis National Historic Site & Davis Mountains State Park, Balmorhea State Park, Monahans Sandhills State Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and others. 4) There's a Wal-Mart! (If you're in to that)...Van Horn is 90 miles from the closest Wal Mart (which is in Pecos). Those things make a difference to people like my wife! 5) Fun events like Night in Old Pecos/Canteloupe Festival, Windmill Square Melodrama, Concerts in the Park, September 16th Fiesta, Golden Girl of the Old West Pageant and others.
Pecos is a good town with good people and a rich history. I say give it a chance...it will grow on you!

I grew up in Van Horn and know Pecos fairly well. I won't give my opinion on which is better but will comment on ignorant redneck's comment. He is probably partially correct, in that the school is substandard. He is living proof of the lack of intelligence coming out of that school.

I really dont know what you mean by that but i do agree that pecos is probably not the place you want to live. If you wanted to live in that area you could get some land a few miles outside of pecos so you wouldnt have to deal with the gangs and the cities terrible government. If you lived a few miles out of town you could have easy acces to the cantalope the rodeo and the WAL-MART!!! Theres also the Balmorea springs near. Yes theres water... lots of water 22-28 million gallons a day into a natural pool with fish in it then into a lake and then for irrigation. Its not a place to raise kids though because of the terrible school system. but if you lives a few miles out it would be pretty pleasant.
I have lived in Pecos for 15 years

Oh wow thanks. Yes the school system is substandard. I however did not attend highschool in pecos. My teachers told my parents that i should go to a better school because the curriculum in Pecos was way too easy for me. I skipped the eighth grade because of a very high score on my Subiaco entrance exam. I then attended Subiaco academy a college prep school.
I dont think i need to continue on about my college education.....

The cantalope buisness is monopolized by one family and they charge very high prices for it. The one farmer that is still growing cantalope has decided to not grow any next year.
The school system is terrible i was a "victim" of it. I really think it would be nice to live a few miles out of pecos as I said in a prior post. You live in Pecos? Whats your name?
I live there too.
