I really don't know much about either place but for the scenery which I'm so into, I'd definitely choose Van Horn. I haven't been there in 30 years, but I thought way back then it was a nice area for the desert.

Default Van Horn

I have been to both places, and although neither of them are places that you could pay me to live in, I would have to choose Van Horn if someone had a gun to my head. Pecos, is isolated, flat, dry and boring, without any scenery and full of ramshackle homes and abandoned stores and gas stations. I have traveled throughout the lower 48 and Pecos has to be the most hideous and undesirable place I've been.

Van Horn is also isolated as well, but there are mountains and nice sunsets, and a better atmosphere in general. The one thing that I remember most about Van Horn is their billboard extolling the praises of the town's (great) year-round climate. Maybe that's a good omen.

I was reading another forum where people were discussing the worst towns in Texas. It ended up being between Presidio(people who visit fear they could be kidnapped and sold across the border at any time) and Pecos. Pecos is described as a dying hell hole with buildings that have been sitting there falling apart since the town started dying in the early 80's. A place where a dead dog will sit in the road for days and people will just drive around it..well, cept for those who just run it over.

I don't think I'd want to live there.

Gee you havent been to pecos in a while. One small part of town is "full of ramshackle homes" but it has been cleaned up and new buisnesses have been opened. The only really bad thing about pecos is the school system. The cities government leaves something to be desired but it is improving and trying to clean up town. The sunset is beautiful from Pecos and you have a nice view of the mountains.

Oh I haven't been in a long time, got it from someone who drove thousands and thousands of miles through West Texas taking millions of photos and that is what they saw when they were there(the dead dog thing). They did say Presidio was worse though.

Presidio is definitely worse than Pecos. Nothing but bad roads, heat, and welding shops. Maybe I'm being unfair to it, but that was my impression. I think Pecos is actually rather nice.

Presido is the worst. I was in Pecos this year and I saw some improvements. Of course, i was there when they had the riot outside of the city.

Smile Wow! Very confusing!

Some love Van Horn and some hate Van Horn! I don't get it. It's either a great little town or a hell hole. No one really seams to be middle of the road on the subject. I get that it's dry and as far as I know the desert is dry everywhere you go and that is why it's the desert. Great scenery, I got that. Nothing to do, I got that. Nice people, got that. Slow paced, I got that. So I am guessing if your from a fast paced city with a big population of rude folks, out of control crime, lots of rain and bad scenery, Van Horn sucks. If your from a tiny town of slow paced, friendly folks, no crime, great vistas and super dry/hot weather then Van Horn is great. The only thing I can say from experience is that I have lived in tiny towns, medium towns and huge towns. I like the small to medium better and the smaller they are, usually the less crime. The closer a tiny or medium town is to a big city the greater the crime. That's my experience. I guess you have to weigh what's more important, shopping, entertainment, availability of jobs or safety for your family but lots of trouble shopping, finding work and things to do. That's a darn shame that you can't have it all. Maybe if we as a nation could get back to our good roots we could have it all. That would take a miracle but stranger things have happened!
