*rolls eyes with ya, fellow Texan!*
I think the WORST example of purely stupid a$$ stereotype, scenery wise, was in "Smokey and the Bandit II:. Goodgawtamighty...there was a sign or something that indicated entering Texas from the east....and suddenly, like a dammed shot in the dark...the landscape turned from pine forests into dirt and cactus and not a damn thing growing a hundred miles around...

Americans love to pick fun at Texas. It's practically become a pastime in this country. So many people find so much delight in being so ignorant.

And Texas tawk is, linguistically speaking, just one of many sub-varieties of what is broadly and properly classified as "Southern American English."
How this came about and evolved and why, I haven't a clue, but as a distant cousin in Mississippi once put it (someone with a Masters in English), "Anytime I open my mouth in front of a bunch of yankees, my perceived IQ takes a nose-dive of 20 points."
But seriously, there are tales galore of New York or Chicago or LA firms taking over businesses in the South and sending down executives to rearrange things and, as once source put it, "treating brillant people as backwater rubes simply because they talked with a Southern accent."

Well, that's cause they just ain't been 'took' yet by one of these 'slow talking, backward hicks', but their time's coming.

Yes, I meant Spanish Moss does not exist in Odessa or anywhere in West Texas. I remember one movie, and I can't remember the name of it, that showed an Amarillo with mountains and a roaring river.

Ok, I got you now as what you meant with the spanish moss. But to tell you the truth, even though it is beyond silly to think it exists in Odessa, I am a bit pleasantly surprised to see that some movie makers acknowledge it exists in Texas at all! LOL
I wonder who comes up with this stuff...?

I wouldn't single out Texas. People pick at just about every state and the people in it one way or another.
