Best choices are Highland Park, Keller, Colleyville, and Southlake

Highland Park and Southlake may be over their rental budget given their occupations.

You need to give a lot more info before people can accurately describe what would be best. More than likely, there's going to be areas in both places that can fully or somewhat accomodate your needs. I think you have two questions to ask yourself.

1. What are the differences and advtanges/disadvantages of living in Houston over Dallas, and vica versa?

2. Now that I know I'd prefer city X, what types of places would I want to live near?

What is your budget?
Are you looking for urban, suburban, rural feel?
What type of sq ft do you need for a home/townhouse/apt?
Is there a particular reason you've focused in on an outerlying suburb/city as opposed to finding a neighborhood within either city?

Southlake does not have any apartments.

Where will you both be working?

I'm pretty sure Highland Park doesn't have apartments. Southlake for sure doesn't.
