Abilene. Great food and health care. When I retire, I hope to move from Austin to Abilene.

Isn't "Dallas area" and "FW" the same??? I think Tyler should have been on this list, too. NE Texas is a great place. It would be my 2nd choice after Amarillo.

OH HECK NO! Dallas and Fort Worth are NOT THE SAME! oh HAYULL no. please please dont make the mistake of thinking they are one in the same only because they share the DFW metroplex area. they are VERY opposite in so many ways. i lived in Fort Worth for many years and sheesh, going to Dallas was like another world...and i avoided it like the plague-unless i had to go to the airport.

Well, I agree with you somewhat. Fort Worth definately is the more "historical" city, while Dallas tends to be alot more hi-tech looking. But, I will say this, it seems like you are in a constant city from Ft. Worth through Dallas, with mild scenery changes in the buildings. This can also be said going from Denton to Dallas.
As far as the topic goes, I live in Wichita Falls, TX. right now (been here 13 years). Wichita Falls is an alright city to live in (although WAYYY behind the times, especially downtown!), especially if you don't want to live in a megalopolis, but still are within a 2 hour drive of 2 of them (Dallas/Ft. Worth and OKC). Wichita Falls is largely a military town (Sheppard Air Force Base), but is large enough to hold its own (100,000+ pop). Real Estate is relatively cheap here, but our crime rate tends to be a bit high. Some of the neighboring suburbs of Wichita Falls are nice (Iowa Park, Burkburnett, Henrietta, Archer City, Windthorst, Scotland, Jolly, Dean, Charlie, Byers, Petrolia, etc.). Traffic here is not much of a problem at all, and now that the I-44 Flyover is almost complete, it makes it very easy to traverse this area.
I have always wanted to be more in South Texas. Being from Montana originally (22 years), I have always wanted to get away from the cold, and into a more sub-tropical type enviornment. I know Belle trashes the Valley at any given chance, but I personally like the diversity, the humid warm/hot climate, and lifestyle down there. I always keep an eye out for a decent job opening in my field down around that area. I also like the upper coastal areas, from Port Lavaca, to Port Arthur. However, I don't think I would live along the immediate coast, due to tropical disturbances. However, I would definately consider areas within a 1-2 hours of the coast, as you are away from storm surges, and most tropical disturbances will lose alot of "punch" once you get this far inland.
Anyhow, that is my .02.
Ian

You're acting like L.A. (city or county) is separate from Orange County.
