Proposition 1 was overwhelmingly approved which hopefully will add needed money for major road improvements without increasing taxes or creating new toll roads.

I wouldn't mind an additional small gas tax if it truly was 100% used for our roads.

This proposed constitutional amendment proves for the use and dedication of certain money transferred to the state highway fund to assist in the completion of transportation construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects, not to include toll roads.

I say it's a good start, but there's a loophole in it that's so big you can run an aircraft carrier through it, and that's what you get when legislators are allowed to craft constitutional amendments that are put before the voters.

What is the definition of a "toll road?" You can add toll lanes until the cows come home, and as long as there's at least one free lane it's not a toll road. Don't be surprised if some of that money ends up being spent on toll projects.

Proposition 1 passes, securing billions in funding for Texas roads - Dallas Business Journal

This is a good start, but there is still a shortage of needed funds, so something else will need to happen before too long.

If oil prices continue to be depressed (thanks Saudis), then Texas will face a serious revenue shortfall in the next few years.

The gas tax needs to increase slightly every few years to keep up with inflation. Otherwise, the gas tax is practically going down every year.
