Default Tulia, Texas - the big drug bust

I was listening to NPR radio this morning and they did a short take on the 1999 drug bust in Tulia, Texas. I had never heard of this before, since I wasn't even in the the USA at the time (was living in Taiwan - actually, I only returned last year).

Don't know if it was ever discussed on this forum, since I'm a new member. Pretty frightening stuff. Read the article here if you're interested:

We were living in the Panhandle at the time and it was in the news frequently for several years after it took place. It was a bad situation.

Sounds like a case of modern day lynching. Felony = no voting rights.

gosh, susanne1, don't mince any words...

documentary done by Channel 13 in DFW about the Tulia situation which was on PBS/KERA last night
Independent Lens: Tulia, Texas – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10

and apparently from article in the FTW paper today, there are police/sheriffs' depts in East TX--Tenaha and surroundings--that are basically stopping people in out-of-state cars and charging them with being tied to the drug traffic that goes on pretty strong in that neck of the woods--
the people will give up their cash, jewelry, valuables to avoid being charged
so bad the legislature is considering adding policy/law to prevent this abuse of power
East Texas town uses law to target motorists | Latest State headlines from AP | Star-Telegram.com
Bud Kennedy: Texas Senate moving to stop 'highway piracy' | News | Star-Telegram.com

one of the few times our legislature seems to be ahead of the curve--IF they pass the legislation...
some cops need to go to jail...

ahhh this is old news, most have already been released and back in jail again in other drug charges. LOL... funny though, they didn't say much about the lone white boy they arrested in the sting, he spent the most time in jail too.

I've heard that a big-budget movie is being made about this. It's apparently starring Halle Berry and being named "Tulia".

All that hate will eat you up.

A few months ago I sat on a jury for one of those arrested in the Tulia drug busts. He sold drugs within one thousand feet of a park where kids play.
For the next several years he'll be busy and wont be able to make an appearance in any movie.

I believe though, one of the most, if not the most corrupt police departments in the country is in New Orleans.

and.... i am a texan, i am a felon (17, dope charge), at the ripe age of 21 i have been clean 3 years... i am a parent of 9 month old twin babies (planned pregnancy, unplanned multiples), i pay taxes, have been in a stable relationship for 3 yrs... i don't drink beer, i do drink tequila, and i live in cocaine central in west texas where i AM the minority.... probably a redneck by susanne1's definition. an UNeducated, sensible, wise-beyond-years REDNECK. not racist, i don't like country music, my mexican neighbours have the horses...

so.... hopefully the bile in your belly will continue to fuel your hatred and ultimately cause what used to be considered ulcers.

*ps: i almost forgot - i'm not inbred and neither are my children. i really don't think i've ever met anyone inbred; maybe that's what's wrong with 'sus'. maybe you're not inbred but you may've had an inbred sort of experience... not a religious zealot but i do believe in god. and i know "nucular" is not a word; it's 'nuclear'
