I am from Wichita Falls, Texas, about 2 hours north of Abilene. I have been through Abilene several times, and I can safely say that Wichita Falls and Abilene are fairly similar towns. Both towns have big colleges, both have Air Force Bases, and both are fairly close in population size (Abilene is a bit larger though).
I do not think you will have any problems with your Hispanic heritage in Abilene. There is a good cultural mix there, and people in Abilene seem quite receptive and friendly. I would not mind living in Abilene myself. I think a move to Abilene would be a good choice, and it seems to be moderately strong economically speaking.
