Retirees, where are you?
I thought I would ask all the reitired people in Texas how they are doing on fixed incomes. Reason being. My husband and I are retired and really need to know if we would make it in Texas. I am just now getting my social security check which won't be a big deal. My husband gets his.
The taxes, the utilities, food, hospitals, insurance car and house and of course vets for the doggies.
So would you please let us know how you are doing and is it hard making it in Texas. I really would like to come to your wonderful State.

The retirees are too busy to be on the Internet, apparently .
My folks are retireed on 'fixed income', but they have investments that are returning more than they withdraw. They are going to be 'forced' to start pulling from their IRAs(?) due to some requirement. My folks have never been wealthy, but they have never been extravagant, either. Not sure if any of that helps at all. They live on ~25 acres (mostly ag. exempt) north of Fredericksburg/South of Llano.

My wife and I are "sort of" retired. I am working part time, and she is planning to retire in June. We find living here (Abilene) about the cheapest possible place. We have looked for other locations, but living is cheap here. I am concerned about ever being able to live on a fixed income, but if you have to, a place like Abilene, Big Spring, San Angelo, Midland-Odessa would be perfect for you. They are large enough to have what you need, housing is inexpensive, and there are lots of amenities for retired folks in all of those cities.

Thank you JA, Trainwreck and nsummer. We need to hear from more retirees. That would help me feel a lot better.
I think the one thing I worry about is that some of us older people didn't save all their lives and now we have to pinch pennies everywhere they can.
I am trying to tell my son, YOU BETTER SAVE FOR YOUR OLD AGE. He doesn't think he will ever get old either.
I have not looked into Abilene before. Maybe I should. East Texas sounded like a wonderful place. I am sure it is but to expensive for us. Maybe.

The flood of 2007 only effected people who live in flood zones. Every realtor has a map showing where those are. Unfortunately, many housing developments in the city are in flood zones. My wife and I have lived here 26 years through 3 floods---and we have never had water in our house. You just have watch where you buy.

My parents lived in California, Florida, Texas, California again, Texas again, Indiana, and California yet one more time. When retirement came, they visited many areas of Texas and chose Tyler. Tyler fit their criteria the best and has proven to be a wonderful place for them.
Their main criteria;
1. Relatively low taxes.
2. A college with active opportunities for entertainment, education, and arts related activities (sports, plays, concerts, musicals, etc.)
3. Higher quality medical services.
4. A variety of churches to choose from.
5. Community and/or church related volunteer opportunities.
6. A variety of dining & entertainment (movie theaters) options.
7. Relatively close to family, and
8. The one they didn't know they would even have an interest in ... 3 Starbucks to choose from!!!!!!

Thanks ripley, that is what I thought. I keep going back to Tyler.
I guess if anyone knows about moving, your parents sure do.
I'd love talking with your mom. Can you get her on here.
