I don't think anyone said that Amarillo isn't really Texas, but rather that the city has more socioeconomic ties to Oklahoma and other neighboring states. The next closest major city is Oklahoma City (sorry, Lubbock)

It's not a whole lot different than saying Beaumont or Port Arthur has strong links to Louisiana, or Texarkana to Arkansas.

As far as I'm concerned, that's where the REAL Texans live!! You gotta be tough and have a strong constitution to make it in the Panhandle....and most of the people there are natives....3rd, 4th generation. Their genes are not diluted with those of Yankees or furriners.....most are purebred cowboys/ranchers/truckers/oilfield wildcatters or they are descendents of same.

In that case I better stick to DFW, San Antonio and Houston lol because I'm not a 3rd or 4th generation Texan, not a rancher or oil worker(lol). Oh well, no worries.

Is that code for inbred? J/K.

Anyway, a friend from college was from Gruver north of Amarillo. I ask him once where'd they go when they went to the 'big city'. Fort Worth? He said no, Denver. It was closer. Amarillo ain't near anything in Texas!

If you were born in Texas or live in Texas, you might be a Texan.

Amarillo is a fine city. If you like your Winters, Amarillo probably has the coldest Winters in Texas. It gets mighty nippy up there in the Winter months.. As far as it being "real Texas" I'd suppose it's as real as any other city in Texas. Just because it's not in the middle doesn't make it any less a part of Texas. BTW, Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo is spectacular. Amarillo has a lot more going for it than people think.

"Amarillo by morning..
Amarillo is where I'll be.."

Great song by George Straight
