I am looking to move closer to family, they currently reside in Killeen TX. my husband and i have a young daughter and baby boy on the way so I am looking for some input on things like Schools, Saftey, Realestate, ect. We are looking to find a small town, with good educational opportunites, family oriented, and wonderful people. we love our friday night football, and our church on sundays. Help?

Here are some of the main questions:

Where will you be working? Killeen? Temple? Waco? Austin? Other?

How close to family do you want to be?

What size town do you mean by "small town"? Some people mean 5000...some people mean 20000...others mean 100000? What does "small town" mean to you.

What is your budget?

What size (# bedrooms, etc.) house would be your ideal? What size lot/acreage?

The default answer for people asking about that area is usually Belton. This doesn't make it the only answer.

I assume if you have family in Killeen you know something about it? ie. it is a huge Army town? There is a pretty good discussion about this in the first link I posted below.

If you want to live near Killeen but also have the best schools in the area your best bet would be Belton as the previous poster mentioned. It is about 20 minutes east of Killeen. It's schools are higher rated and the community is more stable than Killeen which has a huge transient military population.

Other than Belton you could go a bit further away to Lorena or Hewitt/Woodway in the southern suburbs of Waco which have good schools. That would put you about 45 minutes north of Killeen. Going in the other direction if you want smaller towns there is Salado which people like a a small town with decent schools about 30 minutes south. Another small town further south and west would be Liberty Hill which is about 45 minutes south of Killeen and sort of a bedroom community of Austin so that you could work in the Austin area.

If it were me, I'd avoid the Killeen schools if I could do so as teachers there struggle due to the constant turnover of students. If you do live in that area, Harker Heights is probably the best bet.
