Look, I have lived in South Killeen (right next to Harker Heights) for 3 years with a 2 and 4 year old. We were told prior to moving here that Killeen is terrible don't live there it's crime ridden. Not true. Like any city you have good areas and bad areas. We looked in CC, HH and Killeen. We fell in love with the Killeen house. Killeen has grown so much and there a quite a few NEW neighborhoods that are really nice and quiet. Lots of kids. I love our neighborhood, the neighbors are great, it's quiet, and have not experienced any crime or heard of any in this area. Yes Killeen is transient but what Military installation isn't? There are quite a few retirees here in the Fort Hood area. We have a nice park nearby, and the Killeen elementary school is award winning for academics. Like another poster says wait until you come and keep an open mind. You might find that Temple and Copperas Cove just aren't that convenient when you are toting small kids around to FRG meetings, and anything else going on in Fort Hood or Killeen. Especially when you take advantage of hourly care on post and prefer the nice gyms in Killeen vs. the one in CC. Some of the things you want to think about are the local amenities in each of those areas. I prefer the Killeen mall to the Temple mall. The temple mall is not great (neither is the Killeen but it's better). Plus they are building a huge new shopping area across from HH that will open in August. Barnes&Noble, new movie theatre, Starbucks, Ulta and basically all those other stores you expect to find in those shopping strips.

^^ That needed to be said. Yes, Killeen has it's problems. But there are very nice areas and very nice schools in the city. It's not the scum of the earth as people make it out to be. The Southside of the city has very nice areas such as Jamesway and Seageart Ranch.

i agree. there are good parts of Killeen, no doubt. there are even "country rural" parts of Killeen..like Maxdale..
and yes, there is no way that Copperas Cove can compete with Killeen in terms of amenities and entertainment. most of the restaurants etc are in Killeen/Harker Heights.
i am a country girl, and to me, Copperas Cove is even too big for me, but i had to find a place real quick, and somewhere close to Ft Hood, so that is why I am here. but will definitely move to Gatesville when my lease is up. which means i will be even farther from anything...will have to go to Killeen or Temple for 'real' dining out, entertainment etc........

Hi! I have a friend that lives in Temple and she loves it! I live in Copperas Cove and it's a wonderful little community. I feel completely safe here and my husband is deployed right now. I have 3 children and I think it's a great place to raise kids. I have heard terrible stories about people having their houses broken into in Killen, and I've heard the school district isn't that great also, but if your daughter is only 2 you probably don't have to worry about that. I'm assuming your daughter would probably go to daycare....Make sure you either put her in on-post daycare, or do background checks on a civilian daycare. One of the families in my husbands platoon had their 4 month old daughter raped in a civilian daycare. It was terrible, so please make sure you don't just trust they're ok just because they work there. But anyway, like I said, I really like Copperas Cove. We were going to move on post and did a walk- thru of the house and it was an older one....We decided it was not worth giving up our BAH for that house.

Good Luck!!!!!!

My bet would be Copperas Cove.. nice quiet town.. and close enough to Ft Hood so that you do not have far to drive to work.

I have to agree. I am very happy here. At least for now. But I am a VERY "country rural" type person, and though I live on the outskirts, on the very western edge-minutes from Lampasas County/Kempner, I will be BUYING somewhere in the county, outside of Gatesville city limits, and possibly even in Evant or Pidcoke, when my lease is up this fall!

Default Copperas Cove for Families

We have three kids and have lived in Cove for the last 2 1/2 years. I deployed for a year also leaving my wife and three kids here in Cove. They did not have any issues while I was gone and Cove has been a good place for us. Our hose is currently up for sale though because I am getting out of the Active Duty Army and moving to Houston in June. We live in Sunset Estates and it's off Hwy 116 going towards gatesville. There is easy access to Fort Hood without using 190 and it's very quiet and safe in this country-like portion of Cove. If anyone is interested in a home here please let me know. Cove is definitely a much better place for families.

I can attest to the fact that Sunset Estates is VERY NICE. I love it because you have a wide open view-directly across the FM road is nothing but wide open range FT HOOD. It is probably one of the ONLY parts of Copperas Cove I would buy in. But I can't afford the prices, so that is why I am buying in Gatesville, where you can buy a house for 30K-70K easy, even with some land! But if you can afford to live in Sunset Estates, absolutely recommend it. I think the homes go for 100K and up. Way too high for this Registered Nurse.
Oh and by the way, if you live in the area DEUCE6_76 is talkin' bout, you can go on post by just driving over the cattle range on Elijah Road right off FM116...unmarked, you would never even know that you can drive on post, it's a GORGEOUS drive on wide open range, cattle roaming free, for a good 10-15 min before you get to a checkpoint.
also the other subdivisions right next to Sunset Estates are Dewberry Ridge and Reata Ranch-typical cookie cutter McMansions, but at least they are out in the country on 1-5 acre lots in a great area.
