California folk are arrogant but this only comes from Hollywood, the media out there, music out there etc. They have very fragile egos when you expose this. A lot of people in NYC were curious about Texas they were funny and nice to me.

@Radio Libre. Interesting observation. Houston is a tough shell to crack. Im always discovering new things and I am from here! I never understood why Houston is the Texas under dog that everyone, everywhere likes to pick on. Its a hell of a city! Good and bad!

Many in having a view on an area ignore hidden issues like fiscal problems. California has them in spades but they are unseen by much of the people who see the surface only. Beautiful mountains and ocean vistas are noticed. the financial problems are hidden until they are a harsh reality.

I too like Houston but the climate is hard on me as one rarely cold and always warm.

LA is my favorite city I can't lie but Houston is my home and 2nd favorite. I'll always love it. It's a complex city. The outer burbs are generic and a bit soul sucking but the inner city is vibrant with its mix of cultures and extremely social people. That's one thing I miss about Houston. The native Angeleno is actually nice but compared to Houston and Texans in general they're anti social by comparison.

The transplants from the east coast and the small Midwestern towns can be quite rude and think that acting LA means being a jerk. Not even the natives like them. They roll their eyes when they hear a transplant says they came to so acting. A fun fact I found out is that many Angelenos don't go into the biz unless its crew related or technical.

Which outer burbs of Houston would you say this applies to? When I visited the Houston area, I spent time in one of the burbs, Sugar Land, and it didn't really seem generic; it sort of, at least, has a sense of place, relating to its sugar plantation/company heritage.

I think Sugar Land and The Woodlands stand out. I like those two areas.

Katy is pretty generic.

Assuming you’re wondering about the fears of the stereotypical affluent Austin hipster from out of state, I can neither confirm nor deny that because with my work, church, neighborhood and kids’ activities, I mostly associate with members of my own humble (yet culturally-diverse!) lower to middle income socio-economic class.

Now granted, most of my peers are from out of state, but they really don’t seem to be too snobby or xenophobic.

My coworkers and I have to travel the state and Houston is everybody’s second-favorite business destination right behind the South Texas region defined by Laredo, San Antonio, Corpus and Brownsville on its four corners.

After South Texas and Houston, I suppose Central Texas and Dallas are the next most popular destinations. Assignments in West Texas, the Panhandle, North Texas and especially East Texas always produce groans.

(Personally, I think I could love El Paso if it wasn't for the fiendish Enterprise people at the airport trying to pass off Sonics as full-sized vehicles).

Blind Spider stops construction of 151 & 1604 interchange. FYI, this is the fastest growing section of the city plagued with nightmarish traffic problems.

HA HA HA!!!! I had to laugh when I saw this in response to the other post referring to the 1604-151 interchange because I almost posted the same link until I saw you already did. That damn spider screwed the whole project up and put it WAY behind schedule and WAY over budget. I live less than 2 miles from this site and when all of this was going down, we were all just shaking our heads. OK, so the construction crew found the spider and due to regulatory requirements HAD to call out the wildlife folks and a whole bunch of other environmentalist groups. They capture the spider having ZERO idea if it's the only one and the last one. Immediately take it to the lab to dissect it (kill it) to confirm it was in fact what they thought it was.

They've spent over 20 million dollars as a result to re-engineer the intersection so that 151 will now go OVER 1604 instead of the other way around. All of this in order to not disturb a habitat that was actually brought in via dump trucks (fill dirt) from somewhere else just in case there is another one of those critters there somewhere. I'm all about trying to save endangered species and all but this was a freaking blind spider that halted construction of a project that is desperately needed and has cost us MILLIONS of dollars and they still killed the damn thing.

All that said, I still love living in SA. To the naysayers that haven't spent more than a few days here and there for business trips haven't "seen" this city.

Try being a conservative Texan living in Washington State! I've been here 11 years, leaving (retirement) in December 2015.

I work in a professional office, wear appropriate clothing, light make-up and fragrance and am friendly and pleasant.

Apparently women here are supposed to be dressed for hiking and smelling earthy, even in a professional environment. And friendly? No...stressed, angry, unfriendly, terse, etc.

I've felt like a fish out of water here and cannot wait to get home!

Interesting. Many people groan about New Yorkers being unfriendly and pushy etc. but when I lived there I found quite a lot of them were pretty genuine people.

I find some people in Texas fake, esp. that southern drawl "miss, ma'am" crap and the fake "churchy" politeness and prim and proper fake behavior (but then when you dig a bit deeper you dig up all sorts of nasty attitudes). I also find quite a few TX people brainwashed into thinking Texas is the bees knees and nothing else compares. Also the whole obsession with A&M being the best school in the world and no other school even exists. Every time you go out somewhere or when my wife goes on a field call (as a veterinarian) first thing is "did you go to A&M"? Why, who the f*ck cares?
