I've lived in Baltimore, Philly 'burbs, South Jersey, Cary NC and now the northern 'burbs of Chicago. Chicago is by far the worst in terms of traffic and weather. I want to move to a warmer area of the country and will start looking next year for a job (Pharma industry). TX is on my radar and today someone who lives in TX said I should stay away from Austin and focus on Houston or Dallas. He said Austin isn't "real" TX, but more like CA. Doesn't matter much to me, since I haven't lived in TX or CA. I'm looking for a job in the pharma industry (#1 priority) and an area with low crime, decent shopping and nice quiet 'burbs where I can get a single home with a fenced yard and maybe small pool for around $300k. Would appreciate any feedback on which city I'd be most likely to find what I'm looking for in TX.

Probably San Antonio... Lots of medical supply and pharma companies down there and much cheaper real estate than here.

Dallas or Houston for sure. ATX wouldn't appear to offer you anything that one of those 2 cities couldn't give you.

In terms of employment, Houston and Dallas both have better job markets for biotech/pharma/medical device than Austin. Perhaps this will change when the med school opens, but as of now, I would go for Houston or Dallas.

Agreed, even with those cities budget might need to be increased.

Houston doesn't have that stereotypical Texas taste either; it feels more like a Southeastern city.

I'm not sure about pharma, specifically, but San Antonio has a huge healthcare industry.

Houston would probably best fit your needs. Im sure you know the largest medical district in the world is in Houston (Texas Medical Center).. And you can get a home fitting those descriptions off Ft Bend Parkway/Highway 6 or in Pearland with a reasonable commute into work.
