Texas' Best Catfish
Hi, folks. Me again. Hope you're having a magnificent week. I'd like to dive in to a delicacy that many Texans like me enjoy so much. And what might that be, case? Fried catfish ( dive in --- get it? ). Yes, another food thread.
What I'm after in this thread is this: What catfish specialty restaurant offers you the best catfish you've ever had? You can also mention good sides like green tomato relish, hush puppies or pinto beans, too, since they are most commonly served with catfish. Try to think of a specialty place, and there are many, some in big cities, others in smaller towns. Now, try to stay away from responses like Landry's or Red Lobster or Fish City, and the like. Those are good seafood places in their own right and they do serve catfish, but they are not what I consider catfish specialty places. Now you know what I'm talking about. Or I hope you do.
So, let's all gather once again around our very lovely, warm, toasty computer campfire, ready to roast some marshmallows ---- ----- and we'll take time to see what good responses we can come up with. Any travelers interested in coming to Texas who are out there hungry for something different?? Stay tuned; we'll give you some ideas. Wanna know who has the best catfish? Find out -- right here, right now.
Okay, troops, let 'er rip!

Dont know why, but I am particularly fond of the Catfish King in Marshall, TX. I just like their batter, and it doesn't get so messy/greasy as some other places. There is also a decent Catfish joint in Huntsville. I forget the name of it though. But it has a really cozy, kind of backwoods ambience, and they serve really nice sized portions...lol

There is a Catfish King in Livingston right on 59 also. I agree it is not a greasy batter and I like it too. They also have great hush puppies.

Belle, you may well be thinking of Uncle Lynn's in WF. That used to be a popular place with both visitors and locals. I went one time -- in 2000. You won't be able to go back today. It was lost in a fire in 2001, and the powers that be have not rebuilt it.
That place used to have good catfish, and the hush puppy mix included strong peppers. That part I remember.

Belle, I think you must be thinking of Kickapoo Catfish Hole. I haven't been there yet but will have to try it out for sure.
I hate to say it, but the best catfish I know of is served JUST across the Red River (from Wichita Falls) in Oklahoma at a place called "Bill's Catfish." Personally, I think Texas should negotiate a deal with the okies and have that place declared to be on Lone Star soil...
But anyway, in Texas? I gotta think about that one a bit, Case...but I definitely agree with you that fried catfish is a sweet bit of Texas eatin! In fact, I listed it as one of the items on that "A Texans Last Meal" thread!
