Any info on Carthage, East Texas
Hi all, I just wanted to know if any of you know anything about Carthage? The good and the bad. I hear there are alligators there. Are there? I know that it is right on the border. Would that be a problem?
The realtor sent me pictures of this nice 10 acres with a pretty nice house. I wonder how far away from stores and hospitals, vets and all that stuff we need every day. Someone I talked to said it was a big City.
There is a pond on the property. What kind of things will be coming out of the pond.
How is the weather? Any tornados go through there? Does it rain a lot.
Thanks

Carthage is a small town with a Wal-Mart, a Junior Colllege, and a very good youth baseball program. That's about the jest of it. An hour or so away from any mall or decent sized city.
Longview or Tyler would be the decent sized cities to consider in the part of the state.

Wow, that is about it huh? Gee, I am glad I asked. I have no problem with a 20 minute ride out of town but an hour would be to long for us oldies.
Thanks so much ripley.

If you're wanting East Texas, Tyler is probably your best bet. Even if you're looking for the "small, small town" lifestyle...you can live in the "suburbs" of Tyler...Chandler, Whitehouse and be within 15 minutes of Tyler. Jacksonville has a fair amount of "stuff" for its size, as well...it's about 30 minutes from Tyler.

justinlt99, thanks so much. I haven't heard to much about Tyler on here. Every once in a while someone comes up and says something. So thanks again.
That is where we would like to go.

I lived in East Texas for about 10 years...1989-1999. I now live on the coast but am considering a move back to E.Tex. when I retire next year. Things have changed considerably in that area. It has always had the rep of being a very "backward" area. I found that there were many people like me....college educated, non-bigot, non-violent, moderate... still a lot of the "hillbilly" types, but find those people in any town. The peace and quiet of the country makes up for the extra minutes needed for specialized care. All minor stuff can be taken care of in the small towns. I lived 3 miles out of town, on a paved road and I had the best of both worlds. Deer grazed along my fence where I could watch them over my morning coffee. (Sometimes they grazed IN my yard and on my roses!) I was 5 minutes from work and 30 min. from Nacogdoches. The beauty of the area is heightened by the LOW prices of homes and land. I know of no other place like it. And we welcome new blood to the area...as long as we aren't treated as rustic boobs! It's a warm, welcoming community. If you attend church, you will quickly find friends, supporters, and help if you ever need it. It is not just a religious center, it is the social center. I hope you will make a trip to Carthage, Tenaha, Gary and the surrounding area to see if it fits you. Also, Lake Murval has great fishing, swimming, picnic areas, etc. and is very close to Carthage & Gary. As you might suspect by now, I love the area!

Yes there are alligators around, but it's rare to see one. For your desires I also would go with Tyler or Longview.
As for Gary, Gary makes Rusk look like a metropolis. You can't find anything on it because all there is, is a store and the school and some railroad tracks. May be for some people, but that is a pretty apt description of Gary, Carthage is about 15 minutes away with fast food joints and a walmart.
