Oh, I forgot about Burger Shack, if it's still there--it is a little shack on the side of the road in Crystal Beach. I can't tell you how great their burgers are/were. I've been too afraid to head out that way and see that they are gone. The owner/cook was already well into his 70's and that was in 88-89.
*just been told the name is wrong...it's Burger Shack apparently. I edited post to reflect correct name!! Sorry.

Case 44
I ate at McKlesky's a number of times. They made a killer jalapeno-chili cheeseburger. And I remember seeing Cactus Pryor doing his show and saying hello to folks while telling his stories.
It was sad when it closed and I miss the homemade french fries.

Talk about a loaded question! Whew!
There are a number of Great shops for burgers in Texas and depending on my mood any one of them might be number one on any given day.
Chesters, Chris Madrids, Fuddruckers (usually), A number of gone but not forgottens spots dot my memory and can go head to head with any of the active spots, Fatburger in San Antonio is on my list by proxy. I have not eaten at it yet, but I did try a Fatburger in LA and was floored by how much it reminded me of the burgers I had at a few great spots during my young'n years.
The only shop that I have had longings for that I could not satisfy with someone else's burger has been Whataburger. I think that a #1 combo with jalapenos is an all time classic and cannot be surmounted for a long term addictive burger. I can replace the relative flavor of anyone else's burger with something that is similar or close enough, but not Whataburger.
I have even flunked out of state shops named Whataburger as inadequate imitations. Only the real live genuine Whataburger that started in Corpus Christi has earned my top award for addicitive burger taste.
Dadgummit! Here I am in California and you guys made me think about Whataburger. Oooooh you gonna get it now!

I love Whataburger, Red Robin, and GW's in Abilene.
Red Robin is a little expensive, but they are good.
Used to have Fuddrucker's and Buns Over Texas, but the others have put them out of business.

It's still Fuddrucker's for me, with Snuffer's a close second. There actually was a time when I visited Fuddrucker's three or four times a week that I could never get enough of that place. I still go once a week, but it is my favorite place. You should try the buffalo burger.

To: Lakewooder,
Otto's, on Memorial Drive in Houston, one of former President Bush's favorite places, closed just recently.
Back to the subject . . .
Stanton's Grocery, on Edwards St at Houston Ave in Houston, makes their burgers with 1/2 half lb of the best ground meat I've ever eaten. The onions are sauteed on the old-fashioned (for lack of a better description) flat, heated metal surface, same as the meat. These are really juicy burgers and you best use a bib as my T-shirts can testify to.
Another good burger place in Houston is Burns BBQ located on Jeanetta St, just off Westheimer and a few blocks west of Fondren. These burgers are fixed on the same cooking surface as at Stanton's. Problem is that some times they'll cook up a big bunch of patties for lunch hour and, if you go in later (say around 2 PM or so), may try and pass off one of those on you. Cold meat? Yuck. But, when they get it right which is most of the time, those are great burgers.
Note to NEW posters: Please be specific in the location of your favorite places because I may want to try them in the future. When I'm not looking for lost golf balls or trying to get rid of backlashes I'm constantly checking out places supposedly noted for good burgers, BBQ, chicken fried steak, enchiladas and other necessities that make our state so GREAT.

My mistake! Sorry.
In my previous post, "Burn's BBQ" should have read "Blake's BBQ" (on Jeanetta St in Houston).
Burns BBQ is located on DePriest Rd in Houston.
