What we are looking for is a neighborhood that is far more affordable than our options here in CA, with nice modern homes, wide streets, family friendly with great schools, park areas etc. Safety is most important!! My son will be entering high school and I worry about him being welcomed as this is a critical time. Would like easy access to stores and shopping areas, coffee, bookstores and the like. Pop Warner, dance studios etc.....
Everything you describe suggests a suburb of the larger cities, or a mid sized city (like Waco, Tyler, College Station, Denton).

What is your budget? Are you renting or buying? You say affordable....affordable compared to what?

We are an African American family of 6. ..... Would love a mixed area or at least one where people are not concerned with race, just good hearted people. We plan to drive in and throughout Tx, mid Feb but some guidance would be awesome! Our focus is between San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. We don't want to live in the city, but are looking for a nice neighborhood outside/suburbs. Hard to narrow down a neighborhood with out choosing a city first. ......

As others have mentioned, your race will be 99% irrelevant in mid sized cities and suburbs. Most people care if you use your turn signal indicator, or keep the lawn mowed....a person's color, religion or orientation is a non topic.

It sounds like you are wanting a nice (quality school etc.) suburb with good to great sports that also might have AA or mixed population of 10%+ in area. I recommend you look at the Great Schools website (which is not to be trusted regarding academics...only gets it about half right) but gives accurate information on ethnic breakdowns.

Some other areas/suburbs that haven't been mentioned include: Mansfield / S. Arlington (in greater Ft. Worth). Schertz / Cibolo in greater (far NE greater San Antonio). Pville / East Round Rock (in greater Austin). Cy Fair area, Sugarland area and Pearland area...all in (Greater Houston). I'd also look hard at College Station (& Waco). I'd pick all of these areas over Cedar Hill/De Soto (if you are looking for better academics).

But what's your budget? (& why have you omitted greater Houston?) Good luck.

Houston is a melting pot of all different ethnicities so I know your family would feel at home here. If you are looking to live in the Houston-area; I would suggest the suburbs of Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, Tomball, Spring, etc.
The Houston-area is a really great place to raise a family. Since your kids are active in sports..I would highly recommend looking in Katy, TX. Katy has a very large neighborhood called Cinco Ranch that I feel would meet all of your family's wants and needs perfectly! Katy ISD is one of the best school districts in the state AND their sports programs are outstanding.
I wish y'all the very best and WELCOME to the friendliest state in the USA!!

Have you considered Pearland? It's a suburb of Houston and has a good family atmosphere. It's also very diverse and has good sports and academics as well.
