I just graduated from college (Dec. 2015) and my new job is relocating me to San Marcos. I love music and culture, so ideally, Austin would be a great place to live, but I'm not sure it's worth the 40 minute commute 4 times a week. I'm 23 and enjoy drinking (downtown) and going to concerts, so I feel like I could still have fun in San Marcos.

What do y'all think? Would you recommend I pay the extra money and time to live in Austin for the culture, or would you recommend I save my money and live in San Marcos? Or should I live somewhere else entirely?

Also, if you're familiar with San Marcos, any suggestions about the best places would be great! Thank you!

Without traffic, San Marcos is 30-35 min from downtown Austin. Since I-35 is almost never without traffic, you can easily be looking at a one hour commute. With that said, you can look at south Austin and shave off up to 10-15 min from that commute.

You can also look at Buda or Kyle which is relatively close to Austin and will be a 10-15 min commute from San Marcos. Without traffic, Buda is 15 min from San Marcos and maybe 10 min from downtown Austin, (from north Buda, along I-35).

What is your budget and are you looking to rent or buy?

San Marcos itself is a fun college town that has everything you need! There is still plenty of nightlife there, and you can still drive to Austin on weekends or occasional evenings.

Buda/Kyle are suburbs. Yawn.

Live in San Marcos and make some friends in Austin who'd let you crash for the night if you need it. The short commute and much lower rent are worth it to live in San Marcos, which can be a fun place itself.

You are 23 y/o. Fresh out of college & got a paying gig in San Marcos. Are you male? Then Pinch yourself.

From the TX State Website.

Students:

- 37,979 total students in fall 2015. (33,480 undergraduate; 571 post-baccalaureate; 3,460 master's; 468 doctoral)
  • 58% female
  • 42% male
I agree with ChristieP & Westerner:

Westerner92 - Live in San Marcos and make some friends in Austin who'd let you crash for the night if you need it. The short commute and much lower rent are worth it to live in San Marcos, which can be a fun place itself.

Get a nice apartment in San Marcos. Visit Austin (& New Braunfels and San Antonio) on Weekends. You'll be a male, with an Income, in a fun small city......that has 22K female students !! You'll be a Unicorn.

Good Luck !!
