It's not necessary but it wouldn't hurt, especially if you explore the smaller downtown businesses. UT-Brownsville recently merged with UT-Pan Am, and it's now UT-Rio Grande Valley. I think its stock might be going up. It's all what you make it. Brownsville is a great town. Customer service is great and I don't know any Spanish...well, a few words, nothing I can use in public unless I want to get punched.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

I've lived in the McAllen area all my life (I'm 52) of Hispanic Descent and barely speak Spanish, LOL, I get by ok.

Check out the map included...it's called this now, but the original campus locations remain.

As for South Padre Island...nice to visit not really to live at...you'll see what I mean when you go and don't try to during Spring Break (pretty much the month of March)...Google images Spring Break at SPI!

This bridge is the only way on and off a 2 mile island!

It does not matter. Regardless what name they called, a public University worth an Asian guy can go is UT-Austin, TAMU, UT-Dallas, and TX state. For rest public universities, I do not recommend.
